Buildings Open for Heritage Weekend

A weekend of free activities, building open days, competitions, discounts, walks and trails take place this weekend - Saturday 8th and Sunday 9th September.

On Saturday 8th September, the town centre will go back in time as warriors will roam the town, visitors can attend the St Andrew’s Church Beer Festival, learn the art of weaving, watch Hertfordshire Holly Morris dancers, look at how bees make honey and visit the Hertford Farmers Market amongst many other activities on the day.

On Sunday 9th September, Hertford Castle will be open free of charge from 12noon – 4pm. The castle grounds will be transformed into a medieval encampment, where Vikings will roam the land entertaining crowds with battle scenes. There will be fire breathing, archery and falconry flying displays, along with a bouncy castle, BBQ, storytelling and tame huskies.

There are three free of charge trails and walks for visitors to enjoy, including the self-guided Hertford Blue Plaque Heritage Trail and the Hertford Heritage Photo Trail (running from 1st – 9th September) and a ticketed free guided walk called 'Buildings of Delight' where visitors can explore a range of architectural buildings (running Sunday 9th September and Sunday 16th September 11am, 2pm).

In addition, the ticketed 'Horrible Histories' story telling walk will take place on Saturday 8th September at multiple times throughout the day which covers grewsome stories of the last witch, the murderous pie man, the Siege at Hertford Castle and many more. Tickets are £6 per person.

Many other historical buildings will open across the Heritage Open Days, including St Leonard’s Church, Lombard House, The Friends Meeting House, Carriage Court and All Saints Church.
