Fore Street is closed to traffic after a sink hole developed outside the Dog & Whistle pub.
The sink hole was reported on Sunday afternoon and an emergency crew filled the crater with tarmac as a temporary fix.
Following assessment the road has now been closed whilst investigations are carried out.
The western end of Fore Street has temporarily been opened to allow access for residents of Folly Island.
Engineers from Affinity Water have been on-site to assist with investigations.
Temporary bus stops in Fore Street have been re-relocated to the bus station.
It is unknown when the road will re-open.
The County Council issued the following statement;
A void appeared in the road at Fore Street, Hertford, over the weekend and whilst a temporary repair was carried out the void has reappeared. Further assessment today has found the road is not safe to use so we have now had to take the decision to close Fore Street to traffic while emergency inspection and repairs takes place. There is no vehicle access, however the footpath remains open to pedestrians and homes and businesses remain accessible on foot.
As temporary bus stops are located on Fore Street, we will be moving these stops back to the bus station until repairs have been completed.
We are pleased that Chase New Homes have assisted us by clearing fencing and barriers at the bus station, enabling it to fully reopen to help reduce disruption in Hertford and keep buses running.
We recognise the disruption caused to drivers, bus passengers and residents. We are working with our partners to resolve the situation as soon as possible, and will keep the public informed while works are ongoing.
