Off-roaders warned about illegal biking

Tuesday 30 August 2022

Police in Hertford have issued a public safety warning following an increase in calls about the illegal use of off-road bikes.

There have been several reports of bikes being ridden dangerously and anti-socially in the Panshanger Park and Sele Farm areas.

PC Nick Anstead, from the Hertford Safer Neighbourhood Team (SNT), said: "Anti-social riding is extremely dangerous and could lead to serious consequences.

"These bikes cannot be ridden on footpaths, cycle paths, pavements, bridleways, parks, woods or on common land.

"In many cases, the riders are also not wearing helmets, so are putting themselves in danger, as well as other members of the public. Aside from this, riding in this way also causes damage to the land and noise nuisance.”

Anyone caught riding illegally or anti-socially can be issued with a written section 59 warning under the Police Reform Act 2002. If an offender is caught again within the next 12 months, police have powers to seize the bike. If offenders do not subsequently reclaim their bikes and pay storage or recovery fees within a set time period, their vehicles can be crushed.

Riders can also be reported for traffic offences.

PC Anstead continued: "Patrols have been increased in hotspot areas and we will deal with any offenders appropriately.

"We also need the public's help to identify those who are riding in this manner. If you see anyone, or have any information about who might be responsible, please contact police straight away. Please try and get a good description of the rider and the colour of their helmet, if they are wearing one, and make a note of any registration numbers."

Information can be reported online or by calling the non-emergency number 101.
