Little Theatre could get bigger

Friday 19 August 2022

A small theatre in Bengeo is set to be extended if proposals by The Company of Players are approved by the District Council.

The Little Theatre in Balfour Street

The theatre company have been staging productions at the theatre for over 50 years, and regularly perform at festivals, frequently winning awards for their productions.

The auditorium seats 63 people and five productions are staged every year, running for eight nights each.

Converted from a Victorian primary school, the theatre features a foyer, dressing rooms and a control room for lighting and sound engineers.

The proposed extension along the southern elevation of the building will provide a more spacious foyer and enhanced cloakroom facilities, along with 3 new audience toilets. There will also be an increased backstage area and workshop that would free up the auditorium and stage for more productions and events.

The building dates back to 1869 when it was built as a school

The Company now stages far more technically complex productions than envisaged when the Little Theatre was conceived.

It is hoped that the extension will allow more productions to be staged and to bring in larger audiences.
