Sainsbury's: Six Years On

Wednesday 27 June 2018

Sainsbury's opened their Hertford store six years ago today on Wednesday 27th June 2012.

The long awaited supermarket opened its doors after two years of work, which started with the demolition of the former lager brewery and outbuildings, along with the former Unicorn pub. Construction work then started on the new access road and store building.

The site was purchased by Sainsbury's in 2007 and planning permission granted after a public enquiry in 2009.

There were fears that the new supermarket would have a serious impact on traffic flows in Cowbridge and nearby Old Cross, with some predicting gridlock. However these fears failed to materialise.
