Raw sewage has been found flowing in an open gulley used as storm drainage in Rowley's Road.
The incident was reported to local water company Thames Water yesterday afternoon and a team was immediately sent out to investigate.
Residents in Liberty Rise have reported that a sewage tanker belonging to a Middlesex-based company was seen discharging in to a manhole around the same time. Thames Water have told local residents that this is most likely the cause of the contamination.
By Thursday afternoon water was running clear in the gully, although some evidence of pollution was still visible. Water from the gulley discharges in to a channel on the Meads.
