Hertford Theatre Expansion Proposed

Thursday 21 June 2018

Ambitious plans to grow Hertford Theatre have received support from the District Council, following a meeting of the Overview and Scrutiny Committee on Tuesday evening (19th June).

The £13.5m scheme would see an upper floor added to the theatre and the addition of three cinema screens showing the latest releases.

The main auditorium would also be expanded from 408 seats to 550 with an additional high-level balcony and new fixed seating layout.

The plans would also link the theatre with the nearby castle grounds and provide a relocated food and drink area.

A report to the council committee says the planned expansion "represents a longer-term vision for the building and its cultural offer. It engages with all aspects of the operation and presents a view of Hertford Theatre as a 21st century beacon of art and heritage activity for all. The building aims to become the hub of the evening offer to younger audiences, supporting the local night time economy"

Whilst the current theatre is subsidised to the tune of £250,000 a year, the improved theatre could turn in a surplus of up to £240,000.

The plans will now go before the full council executive for approval.
