Hertford Theatre has closed ahead of a major redevelopment that will see a new a three screen cinema, larger auditorium, additional 150-seat studio auditorium and a riverside café-bar.

Planning permission for the £20m project was granted at the end of March. The next stage of the project is appointing a main contractor, with work expected to start later in the Summer or early Autumn.
Costumes and technical equipment will be put in to storage whilst the redevelopment takes place.
The new theatre will include:
Theatre director, Rhys Thomas, said: "Throughout the health crisis over the last year, the one thing that has been even more crucial and evident is a need to hold on to a sense of community. The improvement works will ensure that Hertford Theatre can meet demand and will sustainably stand the test of time.
"The theatre is such a hub, in the middle of Hertford town and so well used by many community groups. The new opportunities and the emphasis on sustainability that the Growth and Legacy Project will bring are going to be exciting to watch take shape."
The project is one of three major investments in the town, with Hartham Leisure Centre and Bircherley Green shopping centre also undergoing major redevelopment
The theatre is expected to reopen in April 2023.
