Leisure centre works set to start

Thursday 11 March 2021

Redevelopment of Hartham Leisure Centre is expected to start at the end of March after Cadman Construction Ltd were awarded the contract to carry out the work.

The redevelopment will see the leisure facility extended and improved with a brand new state of the art gym, additional studio spaces, a new café opening onto Hartham Common, a soft play facility, improved changing facilities and refurbishment of the pool hall.

Eric Buckmaster, executive member for wellbeing, East Herts Council, said: "We are looking forward to starting work on the redevelopment of the Hartham Leisure Centre. The project has been in the pipeline for some time and will really add value to the town and Hartham Common in general. The centre has been well used and the improvements to the facility will provide for future generations"

The leisure centre has been closed during lockdown and has recently been used as a Covid-19 test centre

Stuart Cadman, who is the Managing Director at Cadman Construction Ltd., said: "The whole Cadman team are delighted to be involved in this strategic investment in health and wellbeing that will enhance community facilities for the residents of Hertford. Even more important following a year of disruption to the leisure sector, users will be able to get even more out of their upgraded facilities to enhance wellbeing, strengthen community ties and improve access for an array of community groups and clubs, aligned to Cadman Construction’s commitment to achieving optimal social value".

Warren Doo, Director at Cadman Construction Ltd., said: "We are gearing up to start on site and are delighted to be working with an outstanding team of architects and technical advisors delivering this BREEAM “Excellent” build. This means a legacy of long-term sustainability in terms of carbon reduction and improved whole life costs of the building once operational."

The present building was opened in 2010

The works are expected to take a year, with the new leisure centre opening in Spring 2022, following which work will start on refurbishing the swimming pool. This is expected to take a further three months with the pool opening in time for summer.

A new reception and foyer area will replace the current entrance
The 9 parking spaces in the front car park will be lost, replaced by 3 coach parking bays, and 6 no. Blue Badge bays.
