It is with great sadness that I have to inform you that the "Scooby doo" bridge is now without its scooby doo[:(] A mural that has been since the early 80's is now gone forever disapeared beneath black paint.

[:0] That is an absolute disgrace. My kids love that picture. Worse still, a great landmark has gone. A landmark as important to Hertford as the Black Cat roundabout is to the A1. How do we describe that bridge now? Who the hell saw fit to paint over it? Obviously not a local. Outraged of Hertford.

Somebody has quite rightfully painted over all the other unsightly graffiti on the bridge but surely they could have spared poor scooby.

I don't know, what is the world coming too. My guess is the council read this site and 'Scooby' was brought to their attention. If only they would take notice of the 'pot holes' in the roads and the flodding underpass which is still [after all this time] still flooding on a regular basis.

I am still outraged.[:(!] (And I still live in Hertford). For years that bridge has guided me home after a few too many at The Milly. It was a beacon to all beery staggerers.

It's grafitti though innit? Much like the self-indulgent bison shaped scribbles were in those caves in, errm, Roydon I think it was. If CSProductions and his mates had filmed it's application this community would be prickly with indignation. Tha fact that it was (a feeble attempt at) Scooby means they only took the top of the bridge. Had it been Scrappy Doo then Banksy's remedial antecedent would be responsible for the top of Balfour Street collapsing into Beane Rd.

What is the current thinking with graffiti at the moment. It seems that the latest thing is to paint over graffiti on brickwork with brick coloured paint.

Let me just check I've understood this correctly. There is good graffiti and bad graffiti. A picture of a cartoon dog is good graffiti. It somehow doesn't lower the tone of a street and encourage kids to put other graffiti up. OK, I've got that straight. Tigger, you offered the paint, I can certainly do a good likeness of the Hanna-Barbara canine in question, I'll come round to your street, OK? Or any of the other people who have indicated their regret that this graffiti has been painted out, let me know where you live and I'll be happy to paint a cartoon dog on a wall or bridge near you. [:)] On the subject of graffiti, has anyone noticed a funny stencil of a little boy's face spray-painted a few times on one of the turnings off St Andrew's Street, near North Road? I don't know what it means but I quite like it. I doubt the residents share my fondness for it. Does anyone remember that mysterious slogan about the Flying Hop on the railway bridge on the Hertford road into WGC? [;)] That was there for years. Not graffiti, but there's a big hand-painted sign for 'Hay £1.60 a bale' near the A120 Little Hadham traffic lights which has been known for years in our family as the ZIGO sign because of the clumsy way £1.60 has been painted.

I think the point regarding the Scooby is that it appears to have been around for many years and even on this forum I don't recall many comments against it. If graffiti offends people then it should be removed, particularly if it offends those who have to live close to it. If people complained about Scooby then it was rightly removed. I have also seen the stencil on the wall of Turners. Very Banksyesque............a lot better than the cr*p appearing along the wall on the A414 by the roundabout at the junction with Cross Lane

I doubt there were any specific complaints about the Scooby picture, I mean its been there for at least 20 years and not been a problem. What probably happened is a complaint to the council about all the other scrawl on the other side of the bridge. They then sent out a contractor to paint over the grafitti who painted over everything.

Interesting When does graffiti become (art, cultural heritage, Grade II listed ,a national monument ) – Is the graffiti, in say the Ramesseum, which 18th C French & English soldiers inscribed their names in the stone, as important as the 19th Dynasty artefacts around them. We have a similar problem with the old Farts in the Other Bar in the WH… I think I’ve heard this before - When I was at school I fought the arguments of the Pink Floyd/Yes fraternity (“there’re art man”) and indeed got ostracised cos I liked Slade… Sorry; off on one … back to Scooby…

I'm sorry to hear that Scooby Do is now Scooby Don't. He was there back in '76 and fascinated each of my children. I can't imagine that he offended anyone - he wasn't performing lewd acts, swearing or condoning drug taking - just a plain, naive, white-line drawing. Perhaps if he had been pictured bareback riding, smoking a spliff and effing and blinding he would still be there, or am I being cynical?

30 yards away from Scooby Bridge is the wall by the scout hut which is a mess of graffiti. I notice that was not removed by the same people.
