Classic Confectioner Closes

Candies
Candies, the traditional sweetshop in Market Place, is to close at the end of November.

The confectioners has been a feature of the town for over 80 years and for the last twelve has been run by Heather Foster, former chair of the Hertford Chamber of Trade and Commerce. Mrs.Foster also organises the annual Medieval Night, which has been running since the mid-nineties.

The decision to close has been made after two bad trading years, resulting from a number of factors including competition from new outlets and the increasing bureaucracy required to run a small business. In addition, Mrs.Foster is expecting her first child in January and has recently passed exams in marketing at Hertford Regional College.

And Then There Were Three

A third men's clothes shop as opened in Maidenhead Street. Mr.H Menswear occupies premises beneath the recently refurbished Green Dragon Apartments. The shop has previously been a sportwear shop, a pizza restaurant and Bartons the baker.

A new kitchenware shop named The Refectory will open shortly at 5 Parliament Square. As well as china and glassware, the shop will also sell linen and partyware.

The Beauty Room recently opened at 23 St.Andrews Street, providing skin and nail care.
