Election 2001:
Rising Stands For Independence

Election 2001 Repatriation of power and UK sovereignty lie at the heart of Stuart Rising's local campaign for the UK Independence Party.

He accuses the other three main parties of deception and says that their policies will all lead to the same conlusion. He also warns against the dangers of tactical voting, calling it a "pernicious device" and "the antithesis of democracy".

Other UKIP policies include cutting bureaucracy in the NHS, spending more on school buildings, clear labelling of GM products and welcoming genuine asylum seekers.

The UK Independence party fielded Brian Smalley at the last General Election, securing 2.3% of the vote.

Background

 Results Service
Discover Hertford Online will feature results of the Hertford & Stortford constituency general election as soon as they are declared.

The constituency of which Hertford is a part has been represented by Conservative MP Bowen Wells since 1979, but his retirement from parliament means that the Conservatives are fielding Mark Prisk to contest the seat. The last Labour MP for the town was [Dame] Shirley Williams.

Hertford and Stortford is currently 64th on the Labour list of target seats and 133rd on the Liberal Democrat list. The last election saw a swing of 13.5% to Labour.
