Does anyone know if or what shop they are having in replace of Woolworths?

Went in there yesterday around 10am. Very busy. It has a pound shop feel to it. They are currently only using about 2/3 of the store and the entrance to the woolies music/DVD department is also blocked of by stock. Hope they make a go of it as it’s better than seeing yet another empty shop. I think there is an article relating to it in this weeks Mercury.

As said in my earlier post to my mind it is a pound style shop. I still don’t think they are using the whole of the shop floor and I will be surprised if they are paying the full rent for the premises so I don’t know if it is sustainable business. It does appear to be a low cost operation as indicated by the hand written “Opening soon” sign that was displayed in the window. I have my doubts that it will be the saviour of Madienhead Street. For the time being it is one less empty shop and it does seem to be attracting customers and I have made a couple of purchase there. One thing I did notice on my first visit was that just inside the door was a large display of bird food & feeders while 2 paces outside the door was the pet market stall selling (yes you guessed it!) bird food & feeders. There’s nothing like a bit of healthy competition!

It seems not every body shops in there. Followed two elderly men as they passed there this morning. One nodded toward the shop and said “That’s open but there’s nothing good in there”. Must admit that there is very little top brand stuff.

I had a wander round, but was unable to think of a useful purpose for many of the products. Strange bits of wire mesh, twisted into cubes and tube shapes, odd plaid cushions with raised sides, various sticks..... It may be aimed at those who's homes are short of clutter.

Called in there this morning. They now appear to be fitting out & stocking the whole of the main store.

They have now expanded the stock to the back of the store. They have also added a small ‘Adult’ section with plastic uniforms & leather whips!![:0] Woolworth’s was never like this! I can just see the children going in with their parents and asking 'Can I have one on those'[:I]

Regardless of whether 'i support no team' owns the shop or not, it is still full of crap. I'd rather have an empty shop with the landlord negotiating with some notable names than having a crappy, benefit scroungers emporium. Maidenhead Street is dying.

I don't really care that the owner is on this forum, good luck to him/her for having the balls to make a comment. From my point of view, the stuff on sale in there is the same old tat that was for sale in the now defunct Co-op site in Hoddesdon High Street, and the same old tat that was for sale in Hoddesdon's Tower Centre. Last time I looked, the name Woolworths was above the shop - surely that would be the first thing to take down and replace with a new name?

Jason Hemington opened his general merchandise retail business – yet to be named after three days of trading – in the former Woolworths store two weeks ago. “Local people tell me that they’ve noticed things are worse around here since Woolworths closed down,” he says. “We’re hoping trade will pick up now that we’re open.” Hertford’s shopping offer can be covered on foot in a 20-minute walk. Aside from the selection of charity shops, there is an abundance of independent retailers. Many might assume this is a good thing, but the quality of the offer – from downmarket fashion stores to tatty gift shops – is woefully lacking. The few multiples that do exist include Monsoon, Waitrose, Boots and WHSmith, New Look and QS, and they are all clustered together in one small development called Bircherley Green. Experian ranks Hertford as the 10th worst affected town over the past year (see table), falling eight places in the retail rankings in 12 months. Metherell explains: “Hertford does not have the critical mass of retail or a major shopping scheme that could help insulate the town centre from the effects of the credit crunch, despite a reasonably strong upmarket catering and convenience offer, and one or two upmarket retail brands.” One store owner who has run a shop in Hertford for 30 years says: “I definitely think trade has been affected. We hardly have any big multiples, it’s all small shops and people are just keeping their heads above water. I can’t see how things are going to get any better for a while.” With a population of 24,000, local residents are feeling the effects of the recession. One source says that the number of jobseekers paying visits to its Job Centre has doubled since December. The stark reality is that further economic decline and unemployment could mean that the town’s retail scene plummets even further.

I blame the council for a complete lack of innovation or sympathetic action in contributing to the downfall of the town centre. How about actively seeking out a 'big name' to replace Woolworths with the offer of reduced or even free rent? How about even offering to pay a top brand to open up? The benefits would far out weigh the initial outlay. Where one comes, others will follow. Unfortunately this is happening, but in reverse. One dross shop attracts another and so on. It's a ****ing embarrassment to be honest.

Apologies for not introducing myself formally. I did not realise that I had to. I started reading this forum with no intention of making replies but some of the comments about my shop were what I consider offensive, others might find it funny to call my stock clutter and say that my goods have no use but I actually dont have many lines that dont sell so somebody finds them useful. With regards to the Levington comparison, the only compost I have seen in poundland is the Oaktree 5 litre which I sell for £1.20, There is no Levington 8 litre multi purpose with added John Innes available anywhere in the country for £1. It simply costs too much to buy from the suppliers. I accept poundland buy big quantities and can be cheap on some things but it would not be possible to have this size bag for £1. Apologies if my bus comment offended anyone but in comparison to focus 50l for 4 quid we did have a 40l for £2.60 (all sold now, just in case anyone thinks Im advertising).

Regarding the compost it's obvious that you have checked this out, all I can say is the day that Raquel and I were in Poundland they were for sale and we purchased 3 bags of the compost we still have 1 bag left over, maybe they have ran out of stock and have no more batches left for sale just like you mentioned about your 40l priced at £2.60 which is a very good price. I think that some of the goods for sale are a very good bargain and Raquel and I will continue to look for a bargain in your shop however if I find something cheaper elsewhere I will purchase that instead it's a consumers market in these hard economic times. I will endevour to support shops in Hertford but sometimes Grandad likes to travel to Harlow with his free pensioners pass now and again. Have you thought of a name for your shop yet? perhaps you should name it as you mentioned in 1 of your other posts; 'Well Worth It' Thankyou for your introduction but you realy did not have to it was a request and I think we knew who you realy were. My sign writer is no longer doing signs as his partner is ill which is what has caused the delay with regard to the formal naming of the shop so if anyone can personally recommend a signwriter please do so.

Good choice of name the Woolworths had a line of goods called the worth it range, 'well worth it' is a quite appropiate name, was that your first choice or did you decide after reading the forum? Some members on the forum know me and I don't hide behind a keyboard like most people on here prefer to do so I will introduce myself, Raquel and Grandad maybe the next time I'm in your shop. Been to Poundland today got a bag of J.Arthur Bowers multi purpose compost 15l with Sincro Boost reduced peat enhanced performance, thats a mouth full, for a pound of course any chance of you getting a hold of some I think it would sell well?

Apparently the lease has been brought by the directors (or ex directors?) of Woolworths and they will be opening it as a Woolworths style store in August. I forget the name they are going to use but I think it is something similar to Woolworths. Not sure if it is part of a chain of stores.

If that's true it's great news for Hertford and Maidenhead St in particular. I know other shops have suffered due to Woolworths closing and the subsequent lack of footfall - e.g. Boots Opticians and Coles. Let's face it anything would be better than what is basically an indoor tatty Market stall.

Honestly, what's the matter with you lot, would you prefer it had been empty for the past couple of years? There's nothing wrong with an "indoor tatty market stall" selling cheap basic stuff, it's all some people can afford. Do we really only want an exclusive and antiseptically clean town centre?

Shame the shop has to close. At least the owner had the initiative and courage to open it, and his previous shop in Hoddesdon. Granted some of the stock was 'tat' but you could get some good stuff as well. Pity he has such short notice to get out, lets hope it doesn't stay empty for long and this new Alworths offers good value for money.

Yesterday was the stores final trading day. They will be empting the store today. Allworths due to open early August.
