What does the name “Hertford” mean?
Did you know:-
A rural county on the Northern boundary of London, Hertfordshire has been a sacred place since prehistoric times –- particularly the county-town, Hertford, where ancient rivers meet.
The name of this region, "Hert-ford-shire" is based on an ancient natural scene which also inspired Psalm 42 in the Old Testament of the Bible:
"As the hart panteth after the water brooks,
so panteth my soul after thee, O God."
- Psalms 42
The scripture refers to hert deer around the river Jordan in Israel. It was in these waters that John baptised Jesus. The name "Hertford" refers to the hert deer that ford the ancient waters that flow through the English countryside. The traditional symbol for the county is a deer standing in flowing water. Indeed, pilgrims from medieval England might have felt more at home in the Holy Land with this familiar scene in mind.
According to today's Hertfordshire Mercury Hertford may hold even deeper historical secrets. The windows of St. Andrews church are said in certain circles to hold a clue to the secrets of the Holy Grail! How cool is that?! [;)]

You do seem to edit all of your posts TVA.
Surely Hertford-shire is the shire of Hertford so named after the town.

Of course the county-town is named after the county. In fact the "shire" suffix is essentially just another word for county. The unique and interesting part is the "Hert-ford" prefix.
In the quest for perfection I do occasionally make minor ammendments to my posts.

Nothing and no-one is what we would like to think of as perfect......of course, perfection is in the eye of the beholder, as is beauty etc etc. Surely what we deem to be our imperfections can appear attractive to another....?

Wise words, old friend. Indeed, imperfection is all that makes us human, and all that makes us human is imperfection. Q.E.D.
For example, an artist cannot and should not paint a perfect likeness of his subject. The result would be nothing more than a photograph, and the man no better than a camera. The imperfection in the work of the great artist is nothing other than his style. Thus, in every human masterpiece, there must be imperfection.
