Used to be absolutely awful. So awful, in fact, that I haven't been back for many years. For all I know it could be a wonderful watering hole by now, but in ten years I've never heard anyone say so. Consequently, I'll be avoiding it until somebody does.

Already discussed here, and partly on the Old Barge thread. http://www.hertford.net/yoursay/topic.php?id=2690 I have only ever been there to play darts, and I cannot think that I would wish to go there at any other time. Spritzers were served in pint glasses as they only had two sizes available. Half pint and pint.

Blimey, and you work at a pub too. One rule surely, never slate the competition, no matter how bad it might be? Not a very nice move really Rooster [V]

I'm not sure saying that 'it's not the kind of place I'd go to' is the same as 'slating the competition' James. It's just a choice expressed. The forum is all about opinions and publicans have every right to an opinion as much as anyone else on here. Not sure the distance between the Warren House and BH makes these two establishments in any kind of competition in any case!!

Slate the competition? I think not. The Warren House is not the competition, and who said it was bad? By the way, do you actually know the definition of the word "slate"? Well here it is: slate2 verb (slated, slating) colloq to criticize extremely harshly; to abuse or reprimand. ETYMOLOGY: 19c: Norse. Think again before criticising my personal choice of drinking venue.

On reflection, you are probably right Michael. However, saying that, The Pub Trade has eyes and ears all over town (especially here - see The Old Barge thread as an example!)and I just think that Rooster's comments could have been a tad more 'productive'. Just my opinion on the comment. Anyway, as you say opinions are 'a right'. I'd preferred the BH to be honest. [:)]

Certainly a unique venue, but not great for the real ale lover. Of all the pubs in Hertford probably the one in which the casual customer feels most like an outsider, not that I have ever had any particular hostility on my rare visits, It just feels "private" somehow

My husband who knows quite a few drinking people in the Warren House tells me, when someone mentioned the 'smoking band' they all said in unison, "what ban!" speaks for it's self. Self rule at the Warren House!!
