Good evening everyone, and a belated Happy New Year. I'm new to the forums, but have lived here for 5 years now. Could anyone give me any details on the White Horse in Bengeo , have seen i'ts been newly decked out and wondered if anyone had been in at all, thoughts on menu atmosphere etc would be gratefully received Thanks in advance.[:D]

Anyone been recently, we need a pub lunch for Wednesday week as we used to go to The Greyhound but that has cahnged hands and is not doing food til Thursday next week at the earlist. Not been into the White Lion recently so just wondered what the food is like . Only do a pub lunch once a year!

The White Lion, on the whole, have not been troublesome neighbors, except for football oiks who ruin many weekends for us. Now here's a thought....in this day of banning or making illegal anything deemed to be "anti-social" (smoking, raves, loud parties, Simon Balle's charity event, bikes which sound like bikes, gatherings of more than three teenagers and almost everything else anybody ever enjoyed), how come football has not been banned? In terms of anti-social behaviour, the things which have been pounced on for obsessive and obtrusive laws have all been much less of a public nuisance, caused less damage and injury. Football is, after all, a business, not a game. No other business would be allowed the level of social irresponsibility. I await the backlash for drawing attention the hypocrisy.

From shunt's previous posts I get the impression that the landlord has shirked all responsibility for his/her punters. A video camera and a call to the police looks like the only answer.

Now don't get me wrong here, all the landlords of the WL have been good neighbours and have no problem with accepting my comments when things get out of hand and trying to cool things off. Adam is perfectly competent and I have spoken to him about the problem. However, I speak from my own experience as a landlord, when I say that managers have a difficult job controlling punters once Sky is installed. The remote owners probably only see the increased takings, not the increased nuisance. The whole football ethos is tribal, even in the way it's advertised, encouraging aggressive behaviour in a way no other business would be allowed to. I'm pleased the WL is busy and accept that a noisy crowd over a fence, music and voices are just part of living next to a pub. A noisy aggressive, insulting and foul-mouthed crowd, is something else, though. I just wish it was less football based. I also have no problem with kids playing footy in the pub garden, but not with a full weight, hard inflated ball. When grown men start kicking these against a fence, it's plainly going to do damage, not to mention the annoyance of constant loud bangs. There is absolutely no reason to be using a match weight ball in a pub garden kick-about!

From what I understand, football is now being priced out of the pubs. Pubs have to pay a small fortune to show each game. What with Cristano Ronaldo having been given a whacking great pay rise, expect more and more pubs to stop showing matches as their fees increase to pay his wages.

Shunt - who's fence line is it? This might be a daft idea but perhaps you could get the landlord/brewery to erect a high net to stop the shower of footballs, or even better a higher fence (which might also block out some of the footy language). FWIW Mr G and I couldn't agree more about the whole hypocrisy over accepted anti social behavior in the name of football.

Shunt, you are a very patient man, I don't think Adam would be much help, being a passionate Spurs supporter himself, I think if no joy with him, straight to the brewery, it's a pity a few spoil it for the many, usual comment! my husband drinks in the WL but avoids at all costs when Spurs are playing, he knows most of the 'culprits' that you speak of, that's why he keeps away on game days! I suppose now it will be called a 'Sports Bar' word will soon get around.

We have always returned any footballs found in our garden, but if people used less hard inflated balls, there would be less of them to return and less damage. Some of these balls are expensive too, so if we don't find it or are out, the owner ends up going home without it. I expect them to accept that risk and not tresspass or become abusive if we can't find it. If the door bell is rung and we are asked, we always try. Otherwise, I'd just appeal to anyone in any pub garden, anywhere, to moderate their language, volume and behaviour bearing in mind that there are families and children nearby. Pubs gardens have neighbors, just as your own does and the standard of behaviour should be the same as it would be at home.

Living near a pub has it's good and bad points, but I've lived near (or in) a few and this one is as good as any. For those who want to watch footy, this is as good a venue as there is in Hertford. Just bear in mind there are families living nearby and keep the enthusiasm within the bounds of what would be reasonable if it were next door to you. For a start, it makes your host's job more pleasant too.

Saying that the Champions League isn't a real cup either as it doesn't just cater for the champions of each league...It's probably harder to win the FA/Carling Cups than it is to finish 4th in the league....It's all about money nowadays. We had a "3 courses for a tenner" meal in the White Lion the other night & the food was superb. It was a wet Wednesday night, so not many punters in there eating. This place deserves to be a lot busier - the service was great too!

We went for the first time on Wednesday evening. I had the scampi and it was excellent. Service good (albeit a bit slow as they were busy) and price reasonable. Definitely will be going again... Not sure whether this night was under new management or old?!

went in to teh White Lion on Saturday afternoon/evening in the hope of watching Sunderland get stuffed by Arsenal. Anyway, Doubt I'll ever go back due to the amount of well & truly hamemred people at 5pm on a Saturday. That and the fact there werte a group of lads opening talking about how they were smashed on some 'quality gear' and how one of them had '...almost had a tear-up with some bloke at full time after the Spurs game for knocking my drink and nearly soaking all my gear' It was almost as if the Wetherspoons had closed for the day and all the Scallies had turned up here for the night

Being a neighbour of the White Lion I know that the manager does his best not to get up the noses of local residents, for example, the doors and windows are always kept tightly shut when there's live music, even when it's hot. But as thefair has noticed, the clientele can indeed be a bit scary sometimes: A couple of months ago a group of them were doing airgun shooting practice in the garden in the middle of the afternoon. Not great for a pub that aims to be child friendly!

Got to say it has certainly gone downhill in the past months. I use to go in to watch the football (as i lived in tower street) but when I got stopped by a bouncer asking what football team I supported (and if it wasn't Spurs I wasn't allowed in) stopped me going in there. Now I steer clear at all costs. Use to like it but I'm now a Millstream regular.

I guess it was quiet because Spurs were playing Arsenal. A draw at 1-1 after 90 mins, then Arsenal scored 3, including two penalties in extra time. Full time result Tottenham 1 Arsenal 4 Spurs.......hence, I would assume the moans and groans!

The White Lion is resurrecting its Quiz Night, starting next Thursday, 30th Sept. The previous quiz nights,on a Tuesday, were fairly successful but failed as they tended to clash with televised football. I don't have full details of time etc at the moment,but understand that teams consisting of a maximum of 6 persons can play, with a cash prize for the winning team. I should be able to supply further details in the next day or two.

Now have further details about the quiz night. It will be starting (as stated) next Thursday the 30th at 8.30pm and will last about 2 hours. Teams: maximum of 6 players (no minimum number) and entry will be £1 per person. The winning team will collect the jackpot. As for Woody's comments, I have passed them onto the Landlord, Malcolm,who was a bit miffed, particularly at the drug references. Malcolm was "miffed" because he operates a zero tolerance policy with regard to drugs. He is aware that the pub had a reputation before he took over, but is concerned that people with no knowledge of him, or how he operates the business, make judgements based on rumour and not fact. As for the theft, if it occurred under previous management, that surely has nothing to do with either the pub or the current management. It's a bit like saying that if you had a minor shunt in your car, that was not your fault, you would never drive again!

In response to your earlier post, Buzz, I believe it was relevant to say that I no longer frequent the White Lion and to have offered a brief explanation as to why. I am aware that my loss occurred under previous management, which was why I highlighted this in order not to tar the current management. With regard to whether my loss had anything to do with the pub, well it was clientele from the pub who stole from me so I decided I would not return, never have and have no intention of doing so in future. It was my poor experience and, using your car crash analogy, rather than avoid all driving (or all pubs) I can always take a different route and there are plenty of other pubs to choose from. It is good to hear that Malcolm is tackling the problems he is aware of and that he has a zero tolerance policy. It is probably more relevant if he invites either bubbaoshea or thefair1973 in to discuss their posted observations as opposed to wishing to discuss my satirical response about the quiz. I trust you noted the wink in my post.

A very enjoyable evening at the Lion last night. They had on an 'open mike' night with around eight different acts consisting of solo and duo artistes performing. The standard of the performers was extremely good. Of particular note were two young lads, both 15yrs old, who accompanying themselves on guitars, performed numbers ranging from "Queen" to their own compositions. Outstanding was 17yr old Chloe, who for a little lady has a tremendous voice, and again accompanied herself on guitar. Then there was a father and son, the boy who I would think was about 12/13, who played an impressive lead guitar, whilst his father, also on guitar gave his rendition of a few 'Oasis' numbers. The customers, (no drug taking in evidence, or 'chav' behaviour), certainly appreciated all the performances, and I have no doubt will return in two weeks time for the next 'open mike' evening. (The Quiz night and Open Mike nights will be on alternate Thursday evenings.) If you came along last night you will know what a good evening it was; if you didn't why not give the next Open Mike night a try! (N.B. Apart from being a customer, I have no connection with the pub.)

This Thursday, 21st, another Open Mic Night at the White Lion. The last one was a tremendous success. It starts at 8.30pm and is likely to be busy.
