Does anyone know what's happening? there was a "farewell" notice outside, and now it looks like a construction firm have moved in? here's hoping for a gastropub to rival the Hillside [:)]

It's going to be closed for a couple of months to be turned in to asylum seeker and traffic warden staffed nuclear fuel reprocessing plant run by Biffa. Alternatively; it’s just being refurbished. [;)]

Ha Ha thats funny - not ! Does anybody really know ? I am guessing it is just a refurb as cant see any signs for planning permission.

was speaking to the new owner on monday, and he hasnt decided yet.

The building is being refurbished, but the owner hasn't decided what to do yet, sounds a bit odd?

Does anybody know who owns the American style truck that used to be parked in the pub car Park ? Since the pubs closure the owner now parks it on Bengeo street almost on the crossing. This is causing chaos and is extremely dangerous !

I see that pretty well the whole ground floor has been stripped out, looks to be virtually no dividing walls at all! What I would like to see is the restoration of the recyclying banks that used to be in the car park up to a couple of years ago.

As the parking Gestapo never seem to leave Hertford Town Centre they are unlikely to give the truck a ticket - if it is not parked on a yellow line only the police can ticket it anyway.

The American truck would also appear to have an illegal registration number display, with a UK reg on a small almost square US style plate. However it is legally parked as it does not encroach on the crossing zig zags. It is a fact that 19th century roads are not suited to 21st century traffic and I would rather have Bengeo st the way it is rather than a fast dual carriageway. At least it makes it difficult to speed through Bengeo.

When I arrived home from work last night the truck had gone and was nowhere to be seen this morning either. Lets hope it stays this way. I know it does slow the traffic down but it also makes if more difficult when crossing the road.

quote:so it has been taken over then? Hoorah!! Can you say who by Justin?? Re the American car - yes, it is parked pretty much outside my house, meaning that we now have to keep curtains shut as queuing traffic outside can see right in. Anyone know who we can complain to??

I would start with the police as even if it has tax, mot etc it is causing an obstruction. If they cant do anything then try the council.
Reply ID 18977
the car belongs to the house it is parked outside. they must be able to see the obstruction as well as i can. however, the owner will say that there are no yellow lines so he's doing nothing wrong.

I noticed the police were there this morning, what did they say ????
Reply ID 18982
first i've heard of it. car still there as we speak..hope a bus ploughs into it.
Reply ID 18984
The police must have been speaking to the owner then ? but they were standing next to it speaking to someone at about 08.25am. I am total agreement with you and if anyone has a large bus that we can borrow please let us know !

While you're at it, there's a bloomin' large blue van further along Bengeo Street not far from the Greyhound that needs ploughing into. It creates a permanent bottle neck, long queues and fools charging through at the expense of others brake pads. The police won't do anything about it.

How does all this relate to what is happening at The White Lion? Surely it is off topic Mr Admin, Sir!
Reply ID 19010
quote:Probably is but it is because the pub is closed and fenced off that it is causing the traffic problems outside. The vehicle mentioned is normally parked in the front of the pub off the road. Still don't know what is happening in the pub, looks like a lot of work going on though.

The White Lion is beginning to look good, although we still have no idea as to what sort of pub it is going to be (sports or gastro). I don't know about these things, but surely there must have been some sort of planning or license application, which would give us a clue. In the meantime the Greyhound is beginning to resemble a refugee camp for White Lion regulars! [:)]

I've heard the White Lion is re-opening this afternoon. Can anyone confirm this? [8D]

Yes, it's opening tonight... so say our neighbours who are regulars.

Is it by the same landlord or is it going to be a different type of operation?

It's the same old place but they've now made it a one room pub instead of 2 separate areas. No gastro-pub or restaurant alas. On another point, I also noticed that a new thread about this pub was set up today in the bars and pubs section and then locked. Can admin please tell me why this thread has been locked? After all, the White Lion does fit into that category.

I gather that the air conditioning there is very good, which makes it a good destination in this sticky weather

Visited properly On Friday night. The place seems amazingly big inside since all the internal walls were knocked through. The drinking area is rather more "bar" rather than "pub" like with big screens and high stools. The restaurant bit is very traditional pub restaurant, but no sign of any menu apart from a small specials board. It still has a dartboard area as well. Good to see a proper disabled toilet has been provided in the old post office area. Staff were friendly and the prices were very cheap (4.70 for a pint of bitter and a pint of cider). I wonder if that should have been 5.70, but no complaints there. The patio and garden were tidy and the benches seemed new. Reasonable number of customers as well, though not packed. The car park also seems much better now that it is surfaced and lined out. I hope they can make a go of it.

quote:Let me try again. I have seen the menu and it is lovely. The pub is now owned by Bell & Buckley Ltd from Broxbourne. They have several pubs in London and look to keep the traditional feel of a pub coupled with an eatery and catering for families. The knew name is The White Lion Tavern.

Re American truck I am the owner of the American truck which seems to be such a focus in all your lives. Plainly it was where it was only due to lack of it's usual parking space and not by choice. Every time I returned from using it, I'd tour the area seeking an alternative, normally without success. Whilst legally parked (complete with it's entirely UK legal on imported vehicles DVLA approved number plates)and according to the police, not causing any hazzard or obstruction (except to those who insist on driving at 70mph across a crossing which many of our children use)myself, my children, my partner have been subject to abuse, missiles being thrown, criminal damage to property and threats of physical violence. One man even called at my door to threaten to beat me up. Thanks neighbors! I was doing my best for you in difficult circumstances and you should consider that I'm legally entitled to park there permanently, but don't, out of consideration. Only one of you noticed the van of the same size that was parked two doors down for a month. Oh the perils of not being bland in a bourgois town! The police have been informed of those of you engaged in anti-social or criminal behavour and to the rest of you, grow up and get a life! We are a friendly and respectable, family. The lack of nieghbourly good-will from some of you curtain twitchers and those who identified themselves as thugs astounds me. I do not wish any of you, or your property to be crushed by a bus, by the way as you wished on me.

We popped into the White Lion last night because to be honest I could not be bothered to cook ! Plenty to choose from on the menu. I had a Lasagne which was lovely and my husband had cod which he really enjoyed. Great service, friendly staff. Will be returning very soon.
