I have discovered a time-warp! Has anyone else been in The Ram Inn lately?

Actually, you are right. I'd love it if all the places returned to the way they were. Well done The Ram Inn I say. [:)]

Explaining what you mean may encourage more responses, especially from those who do not know what the hell you are talking about.

You have significantly edited the content and nature of your opening post after a response was posted. This is not allowed. http://www.hertford.net/yoursay/topic.php?id=378 In addition, reviews of The Ram and comments similar to those that you removed have already been posted elsewhere on the forum. Your opening post was originally critical of The Ram but your last post appears to be in praise. This is not the first time you have been warned about your postings. You have also offended other members of the forum on more than one occasion. As previously suggested, please consider making this your last post.

Ok. I edited my thoughts because, on reflection, like a few others who post here (no names) I simply felt that my opinion may be deemed to be a tad off-colour to those. My opinions are my own, as are those of anyone who chooses to post his/her thoughts. There is many an opinion, including your own, that I and countless others do not agree with. I was born in this town. I went to 3 schools in this town and worked in this town for many years. I simply feel that I am entitled to an opinion about those places that invite us all to pay money in their premises, in order to keep them flourishing. So here goes. I found the Ram Inn to be a bit like walking into a Doctor Who episode where the Landlord may have well been a Dalek with his militarian approach to serving a beer, the Cybermen protecting their 'space' at the bar and errr, ooooohh.... I think I like it now. Is it ok to say that?

More like a Torchwood bar I would have thought, can't wait until the next episode, if you do not like The Ram why go there? Why don't you just take a ride in the Tardis and go elsewhere. oh! and yes I am a Cyberman.

James said it was his first visit, and obviously he had to go there to find out what it was like. Personally, I went in there once and didn't even stop for a drink. The place was dreadful.

Like I said in a previous thread somewhere, I found it somewhat like walking into "The Slaughtered Lamb" pub in An American Warewolf In London.

Not sure I get your meaning. The link I provided was to information about the restrictions on editing posts. With regard to locking existing topics where a duplicate is posted, it is the duplicate that gets locked so that all discussion of a subject is in a single thread. [:)]

I think what Scouter was referring to is if it is possible to prevent posts from being edited once a reply to it has been submitted, or an extra post has been submitted in the thread

Apologies. Yes, it is possible to prevent posts being edited, but I think it's a useful feature and as long as it's not abused there shouldn't be a problem.

According to his previous vociferous and aggressive posts, it most certainly WAS NOT his first visit to The Ram. He has previously posted regarding this pub and has been rude to the point of ranting. Whatever his problem is with The Ram, he would surely be a calmer and more pleasant person for not taking his hard earned cash into a pub that he already KNOWS he doesn't like! That is of course assuming that he was ever there at all as the impression a lot of people are getting is that he just likes to aggressively moan about it? I don't think I am alone or mistaken in the view that there is a particular clique of contributors that get some sort of pleasure from attempting to stir as much bad feeling as they can about this pub. That being the case, then the best advice would be to stop self-harming and take your custom elsewhere! Soon.

Hector. Thanks for your words. You are right, I posted a while back and was informed by Admin that it was the wrong area so I thought I'd add the same in the relevant area - here. My friend and I went for a drink into the Ram and found it to be a sterile time-warp, where the landlord wasn't welcoming and those sat around the bar made us feel like we had just wandered into their own lounge. Tom Baker has nothing on this place! I am sorry that you do not like my comments but I (me) found it to be an unwelcome place and I won't go there again. I won't recommend it either I am afraid.

I am one of many people who have noticed your apparent hostility towards The Ram (amongst others), and wondered what your reasons may be. You have made your opinion perfectly clear about this pub and any of its activities, regulars etc., in your previous posts - wherever you have posted them. You are also perceived to make your 'attacks' personal. Why do you then feel the necessity to start another thread just to garner negative comments, which incidentally now seems to be more negative about you than the pub in question. What I find so strange is your need to KEEP banging on about the place. OK, you don't like and won't recommend it to others, that's your perogative. As you have made that so abundantly clear on other occasions in what has been seen by many readers and contributors as an overtly hostile and aggressive way, are you now perhaps overdoing your hostility and drawing attention to the fact that it's you that seems to have a problem with the pub, rather than the pub being a problem? There are few pubs in town that I wouldn't choose to use and I would hope that I am able to convey that opinion (when necessary) in a fair and balanced way. Discretion is sometimes the better part of valour, especially as without it you are perceived as being overly bitter, hostile and rude........ Just my opinion, you understand.

Thanks for your words hector, I was just referring to my first experience at The Ram Inn. Myself and my friend simply found the place to be the most unwelcome pub ever, both bar-people and people-bar. Maybe the landlord's rudeness has rubbed off on me. Sorry if it offends but I won't return or recommend the place, open-mic or closed.

I am sure that anyone involved with The Ram in any way, shape or form will be most gratified to know that you shall never darken it's doors again. It is always advisable to comment from direct experience rather than uninformed opinion, and as you claim (?) to have only visited this pub once, how were you aware that 'Racey' was playing on the stereo in the front bar every 50 minutes a few weeks ago when you allegedly went there to be able to give an informed comment on an event that you never saw? But this did not stop you from making hostile comments about the event. Answers on a postcard please.......

There is a theme developing here. On the one hand we have the 'rats' and 'sinking ships' scenario and on the other hand we have the faithful few (still clutching their Blue Peter badges) despite the best efforts of the landlord to alienate everyone. Ok, he has a weeny personality disorder but at least it makes for an interesting visit. If you enjoy amateur psychology you'll have a field day - and the beer is still good.

I agree with James 007, a nasty pub, my husband ordered a beer, a glass of wine for me and a tap water to go with it. They told him, they didn't do water, so we left, they won't get our custom again. I speak as someone who used to like the Ram.

Hector. I have only visited once (the same occasion was posted in the Fore Street thread), got the 'dalek' treatment from the bar staff, listened to Racey, Noddy Holder and then called it a day. I merely suggested that this pub seems stuck in a 70's timewarp (some people may enjoy it like that, myself and other people I have spoken to don't I am afraid). The raucous, continuos laughter at nothing by one drunkyard near the door was the last step for me and my friend so we moved on. I am not a publican and I don't want to be. If I did, I reckon I may provide a little bit more hospitality for a new face. A smile maybe? Empathy maybe? Obduracy is a no-no thanks. Just general customer advice, apologies if you don't like it. As Steve mentioned, voting has been cast by my feet.

The water apparently is not safe!!!! What do they make their ice cubes with then? (They are limited in quantity aswell) or were on my last visit in the dim and distant past.

Unless you are a guest and like a G&tT with tonic water, but the tap water is ok for non regulars?

Good idea! Also, the Ram could get a makeover, with the furniture supplied by the happy guy at the Pine Shop and the tills could be made self scan by Tesco! [:)]

Customers have been served with tap water when they have ordered other drinks, the landlord may have had the water tested since your last visit.

There is a great deal said about this pub - you are witnessing the destruction of what was a very good local. Much of what is said about the landlord is correct, he is rude and is sending the Ram on a path much like what happened to the Sportsman. I suspect that the Ram may not recover for many years either. But - I must insist that it is not the regulars fault and the similarity to 'The Slaughtered Lamb' is only because of the depressing influence from the landlord. If anybody from McMullens reads these entries please can you do something before this trend becomes irreversible!

Reply ID 33393

Although the Ram Inn is as far as McMullens are concerned, contractually a tenancy, it is however run on a daily basis by manager(s) employed by the Tenant. to my knowledge there have been in excess of 8 different managers over the past 2 years, unless the managers employed have an incentive to increase trade then the situation will sadly continue as at present. I would imagine for McMullens to terminate the tenancy agreement then they would need just grounds, as long as the tenant is still paying the rent and there are no legal or contractual issues I am not sure what McMullens can do.

Yes, I agree, people will vote with their feet, but when you state that no-one owes this establishment a living, do they therefore have the right to try to destroy the living of it's management for whatever their reasons may be? It seems to be that for some individuals, that reason is purely spite.

Hector. No spite. Apart from the poor service from the grumpy landlord, and the unwelcome feeling from those propped up at the bar, the boozer could probably do well.

Excuse me? What makes you think that anyone's trying to "destroy the living of it's management" or close it down? No-one's standing outside the door picketing the place or or petitioning Mac's to shut it. People are simply airing their opinions. There's no campaign "against" the pub - just a significant number of dissatisfied customers submitting their points-of-view to a public forum. If the management can make a living out of running the pub, that's fine. If they can't then it's because they've failed to attract or hold on to enough customers - nothing to do with spite or any campaign against them.

Yes, there are no demonstrations outside or placards being waved, but this forum carries a lot of weight and influences a lot of people. I find it worryingly confusing that a few of the contributors to this forum who quite freely criticise this public house and its management, and state that they no longer go there DO still go there, as well as some who have never stepped through the door. If the management is so awful, miserable and unwelcoming then I would suggest that instead of stating one thing and continuing to do another, stay away! Meanwhile, I do find it somewhat strange that contributors who have previously stated that they have been to this public house and found it to be the worst experience they have ever had, then need to dig it all up again on a new thread on the pretence of having just visited the place for the first time to see if it's really as bad as they actually said it was some weeks ago! As for the management, perhaps there is an argument against them to be more hospitiable and welcoming and I am sure after reading all these posts, that is something that they may set out to do. I don't go into this pub very often, but when I do I am able to ignore any miserable and disagreeable 'regulars' that might be propping up the bar, I am also confident enough in myself, not to need to be greeted like a long lost friend in order to be able to enjoy my drink and newspaper, or the company of friends. The place can't be all bad if all the b/b rooms are booked untill the end of March! I wish the management luck and as I have no axe to grind against them, I wish them well.

I couldn't agree with you more MM, which is exactly the point I made at the beginning of this thread. As a matter of interest, these comments, together with previous comments on other threads about this pub and entertainments etc (many by people who STILL drink there) have been given to the landlord. Whether they have any effect remains to be seen. Meanwhile MM, as an infrequent contributor, it's good to have you back too!

She's back again? This must be the third time she's come back to the Ram then after flouncing off after another row with the landlord. She said she'd never work for him again. Still, the talk from the back of the beer pumps is that she had the same argument with the landlord at the White Lion.

Do you not remember the debacle of the Bernie/Theresa partnership or the short-lived Bernie/Jerry attempted and aborted coup? There appears to be a common link here to the reason the pub was in the state it was before Jim & Kay took over. Or am I wrong?

Yes! Err.., to requote "....the reason the pub was in the state it was before Jim & Kay took over." The place was having severe ups & downs, but went into freefall after that... unless you are into Kareoke of course. The politics of the pub don't interest me, the state of the place does. I can vote with my feet & have... Nuff said.

Interesting, but I remember clearly not being able to get a sandwich or a hot meal at lunch time during this 'ups and downs' period. This is now not the case. I also remember the place closing for no apparent reason during this 'ups and downs' period for days on end without explanation and 'duty managers' being drafted in at short notice and basically living out of their cars. When Bernie had anything to do with managing The Ram the place was not properly managed. She's a good barmaid, but cannot manage a pub. It has been proven. Surely a stable environment providing good food and drink is a step in the right direction. If you have voted with your feet as you say you have, then I hope you are enjoying whatever pub you now use, but do not think that you can possibly have a valid opinion on a pub or facility which you no longer frequent.

Of course I can! That's why I left. And fairly obviously my opinion is based on that experience. It would take some very good reviews from someone whose judgement I trusted to make me return....... Err.... ......deafening silence....

What's any of that got to do with Bernie 'being the best thing that's happened to the pub' and, since you no longer frequent the place, how do you know what difference it has made on this occasion? She certainly made a difference on previous visits, but my memory of them is not clouded - I remember the closures - I also remember the 'guests' having to cook their own breakfasts as no-one was there to do them. Great stuff eh? I for one don't want more of the same.

Jim has been seriously unwell for some time and is presently in hospital. It's a shame that Kay and Jim are moving on, but it's a big place to run - B&B, food etc., and his health has to be considered first. I would like to wish them both well and hope that Jim makes a speedy recovery.

You seem gleefully happy (& rather desperate to be the first) to post (in your words) unconfirmed information to all & sundry. This follows on from various posts supporting the couple currently in residence. Who personally I feel rather sorry for bearing in mind the Manager’s condition. I think Sheila that you chose your pseudonym quite well..

Yes, I have bothered to trawl and find out what I said as you obviously have. My 'boycott' as you choose to describe it had nothing to do with the 'Pub' in general just the excessive advertising of events that other establistments are critised for. My interpretation of the situation was correct as Kay has had to work too hard with the onset of Jim's illness. I did pop in 'after your posting' I would rather hear the truth rather than gossip. To set the record straight they are moving to another Pub when Kay will not have to do the long hours she has been doing. No B&B for a start. Don't make assumptions until you know the facts. An edit after another little look, think about some of the comments you have made about the staff.

Firstly - this was a bit of (now confirmed) news that I thought was interesting. Secondly - I trusted the source of the information Gleeful? About a sick man? About another change of landlord in a pub that has seen its first stability in two years? Absolutely not!

What actual 'advertising' has been on this thread? Or are you talking about another thread maybe? I thought this was about the pub itself and your 'voting with your feet' not to use the establishment. Sorry I'm a bit confused??

I was in the pub yesterday lunchtime when Kay herself told a few of regulars at the bar (me included), that she and Jim were moving on, so I would utterly trust Sheila's source of information! I don't detect any pleasure at their departure in Sheila's post, but I do find it confusing that many people who have previously made negative comments about the pub and the landlords, who claim not to go there any more, still do go in there on a regular basis! I have always got along very well with Kay and Jim and have taken interest in Jim's condition for a long time. I wish them both health and happiness in their new pub, and, if it has any impact on The Ram at all, I would like to thank all those people who have continued to support the place despite the negativity.

I'm not sure there is a definitive list, as it sometimes seemed that there were new managers in twice daily. Henry & Lesley have been gone for exactly 2 years, Jim and Kay managed to stay 8 months so there have been at least 10 others in the intervening 16 months, not counting the new ones now. Hopefully they will be given a chance to settle in.

Was in The Ram on Saturday night for beer and darts - first time for a while. The place was heaving (at least the front bit was), reminded me of the old days before the multiple management changes. A bit less Middle Earth than it used to be, though, which is definitely a shame.

I have heard that it will be open again on Tuesday but don't know how accurate that may be. Two weeks is a long time for a pub to be closed, long enough for the remaining regulars to have made themselves at home elsewhere. Maybe the new management want to attract a different clientele?

I see it has re-opened, the whole pub looks brighter, bigger and inviting the new landlords obviously have put in a lot of effort, hopefully this place will start to fill up and seems to have a good potential lets hope the landlords dont move I think this is what the ram needed a make over and a landlord/lady that will be a familiar face over the years. time will tell. good luck

On the heels of praising the Peking to the ceiling, a word of acclaim for the Ram. Popped in there yesterday purely by chance, one of those “where shall we watch the wendyball?” moments. Used to be Tigger’s local so intrigued to see how the refurbishment worked. It’s clean & comfortable (not something you could always accuse the old Ram of being) food looked good, beer, well its Macs so I’ll let others comment. TV, HD, one in each bar, very good. On the basis that hell will freeze over before either Simon or Matt allow WB in their respective pubs (& thank the deity of your choice for that) this looks like most likely World Cup venue for my chums & I . Bad luck Ram. Oh. And to all those Spurs fans in there yesterday. Soz for laughing…….

Yes it is indeed back open again, with new managers Steve and Hannah and it is better than ever, the place has had a revamp and is cosy and friendly, the Beer although only Macs and no guest beers is very well kept, and is spot on. the welcome and atmosphere is both friendly, and open to all ages and sexes, a thing that was not always the case before the Ram was known as an " Old Blokes pub" a large screen tv and excellent sound system.with sky for sporting events. and I understand they are starting a new menu soon. the rooms have all been redecorated and are very popular. an excellent traditional pub right in the centre of town. highly reccomended.
