Preserving the character of Hertford
I go away for 1 week and hideous railings have appeared on Port Hill. Who has allowed this to happen? They are totally out of keeping with the surroundings. Surely the Council or whoever could have replaced the old railings with the same style post and rails that were there before? Is anyone out there a member of Hertford Civic Society? Are they not consulted about such things?

Probably could not be replaced with a similar stlye due to "Health and Safety" considerations. Did someone say Nanny State ? ;-)

The railings wouldn't look so bad if they were painted black - does anyone know if this is what the plan is?

Has anyone seen the huge gap where the steps in the Middle of Port Hill where the yellow house is situated? They haven't measured them up properly Doh!!!!! I think they should be painted dark green, as there is are a lot of trees down Port Hill. They are the same as the other ones near the Castle gates unfortunately, but as they are new and shiny they are rather offputting and also don't fit the length of hill they are supposed to protect! Gosh if the council had brains it would be deadly!!!!!

I agree the new railings look rubbish. Does anyone know whether they were changed for a particular reason (i.e. some drunken plonker fell through the old ones) or whether keeping the original style was too expensive?

I don't know the answer but looking at the bits remaining of the old railings, they a) let people slip through, especially children and b) they probably don't make that type of railing anymore. Council has probably got a lock-up with silver iron railings and they put them together like meccanno !!! [;)]

How many incidents of people falling through those railings have there been? Enough to warrant replacing all the railings? Apparently, it is a Health, Safety and Stupidity requirement that the railings must have gaps of less than 10cms so that kids can't get their heads stuck in them. What will they do when a child with an exceptionally small head gets stuck? Replace them all again with mesh? I got my head stuck in the railings of Bournemouth Pier as a kid (really!) but the same railings are there to this day. Why has Hertford taken it so seriously? (Perhaps my parents have phoned them up...)
