FORUM RELAUNCH

The Discover Hertford Online forum has now been running for over 13 years and over that time we've welcomed over 1300 members. When the forum was originally launched there were few mobile devices and many people were still running with CRT monitors. When we deployed the forum we opted for Snitz as a software provider, based on Microsoft technology. The forum is written in Classic ASP and driven by a Microsoft Access database. In the intervening years Classic ASP has been replaced by ASP.NET and the Snitz userbase has declined. The software has not been updated in over four years. For these reasons we have decided to retire the existing forum and start afresh. On the 1st of December we will be relaunching the Discover Hertford Online Forum using phpBB, a popular and widely used platform that is based on PHP and MySQL. The software is regularly updated and future releases will feature a Responsive Web Design that adapts for mobile devices. We did consider transferring the existing forum data from Snitz to phpBB but there is no simple migration path and the volume of data involved makes this unfeasible. When the new forum is launched we will invite all existing members to re-register and contribute to the forum. The Acceptable Use Policy will remain unchanged and the small number of banned users will remain banned. We would encourage members to re-register with their existing usernames, but if you want to change your username you will be allowed to do so. The old forum will remain open for a week after the launch of the new forum but will not accept any new discussions - these should be posted on the new forum. After that time all discussions will be archived. The old forum will remain online for reference. There will be further changes at Discover Hertford during 2014 as we modernise the site to use developing technologies.

Bother! - I've only just graduated to "Senior Member" (I thought there might at least be a badge) - It'll take me ages to start all over again. Can someone begin a thread on the new site about recycling or inconsiderate parkers to get all us argumentative types a kick start? Cinema anyone?

Marginally more seriously - have you considered "alter ego" theft? It is very tempting to log on to the new site using an established "nom de plume" (that isn't your own) and just get right up peoples noses for the hell of it? Or am I just a paranoid/devious type?

This is a very good point. Existing users should only be permitted to use a user name that is associated with the contact email address for their existin user ID. Some people, in fact quite a few, know me. I do not want some one else using my forum name. This is a small town people know each other. Whilst this is a free service and much appreciated thus the change has been communicated without a lot of notice.

I would hope that no-one using this forum would be dishonest enough to try and hijack someone else's username. Anyone trying to register with an email address other than the one they use here can expect to have their registration queried. Therefore now might be a good time to check your existing registration on this forum. Needless to say we don't discuss security measures in detail on the forum. [:)]

No, once you have credentials here you're good for the new forum.

It looks like it will similar format that sites such as Digital Spy uses. A few questions for Admin: Are you going to allow Avatars? Will it be easier to add photos and/or video content? Will there be an increase in user groups? How long will re-registration take? Will wee need a new password? - mine is automatically displayed in dots and I haven't got a clue what it is. Are we going to get better smilies? [:)] (may have been mentioned before - but exactly what time can we re-register?) Thanks.

Are you going to allow Avatars? Not initially but this is certainly something we can look at after the relaunch. Will it be easier to add photos and/or video content? Photos, yes, video content, no. Will there be an increase in user groups? Not sure I understand the question. Do you mean user rankings, in which case no. How long will re-registration take? Anything between a few minutes and a few hours. Will wee need a new password? - mine is automatically displayed in dots and I haven't got a clue what it is. You will be asked to provide a password when you register. This could be your existing password or a new one. Are we going to get better smilies? [:)] The existing ones are marvellous enough (may have been mentioned before - but exactly what time can we re-register?) From mid-morning onwards

Thanks for the answers. In reference to question 3, will there be any additional sections on top of community, shopping etc? Oh, and one other,... will hyper-linking be made easier?

Hope. I hope to walk out of my house and find an AC Cobra with a ribbon on it and a tag saying happy birthday. Dishonesty is not controllable and cannot be rectified until it has occurred. What do you mean by 'check your existing registration on this forum'? What should we check and how, specifically?

Click on your name on this forum, next to any of your posts, and check that your details are correct, especially your email address.

Well I've registered, just waiting activation. Just saw this "1. You're trying to register from a webmail acount, such as Yahoo, Hotmail MSN etc. This is not allowed for security reasons.". I have to use GMail as my ISP doesn't have email capabilities. So can I still be able to join?

Seems the new forum is currently down. Joe i'd be astounded if gmail users were not allowed. Also the argument against yahoo/hotmail users is pretty weak these days. (used to be valid, not any more, times change)

How long does it take for user ids to be approved? I registered mine yesterday, but it's not activated yet. Could possibly be that the site crashed as I submitted the form.

So I read your announcement about email addresses being up to date, and thought "Nope, that doesn't apply to me". Email address now up to date and I'll go sit in a corner with my dunce hat on while you work your magic. Thanks :)
