The Ram closed its doors, for the last time last night. it is planned to be closed for a month, refurbished and then reopened under a completely diferent format with a new name. [:(]

Sounds good. It wasn't great in there so I hope it becomes somewhere much more inviting to go. The days of the old traditional drinking pub are numbered, and Hertford has quite a number of these anyway. People nowadays generally want more civilised family friendly places to go.

Sorry if this is a stupid question but what does 'It's going to the Dog and Whistle guys' mean? It'll still be a McMullens establishment, won't it? So the people who run the D&W will be paid by Macs to run the Ram, selling McMullen beers? Or have Macs sold The Ram to the D&W ppl? [?]

No not seen the plans. just know what the the dog and whistle is like and from information from most recent Ram staff. to who they passed on what their intentions are whilst they have been visiting. so yes just hearsay. will just have to wait and see but as previously stated its still a macs house so will presumably be still selling macs beers.

I think this is great news. Hertford appears to have no shortage of "old man's pubs" and traditional boozers, so something new should definitely be welcome. Hopefully not so much the end of an era but the beginning of a new one.

I think it is fair to assume the gin stuffed imbecile from outside Hertford who clearly came from Hertford for a 'young' pub didn't go to the White Horse. And, frankly, whilst I genuinely enjoy the variety of pubs and other social activities that Hertford has to offer I feel reasonably confident that the vomit being washed from the pavements and shop doorways on a Saturday and Sunday morning does not contain fluids consumed in an 'old mans pub'. I'm not stereotyping the 'young', it's what I've seen. And there are places in Hertford that I class as middle aged pick ups. But that's okay. It's part of the variety. So enjoy the variety. It makes Hertford what it is.

The Ram has never been the same since Henry the landlord left - probably 5/6 years ago. Had many a great night in there during his tenure - St Patrick's nights were particularly good, and also his organ playing sessions well into the early hours. A good old style knees-up 'lock-in'. The days of it being an old man's pub are long gone. The last set of tenants seemed to be going for the student crowd much more - the contemporary décor, club style music nights, karaoke and the abolishment of the infamous Bulls**t Corner meant that it lost it's status of being a traditional boozer a long time ago.

Being in my early thirties - well actually lets not lie - closer to Mid! I think there is a good mix of drinking establishments available in Hertford. There are a few "old man's" pubs - which I love (especially the White Horse!)and there are cooler more modern drinking places if I want to drink cocktails. The only thing that seems to be missing is somewhere for a decent bottle of wine, without thumping music or the requirement to eat on a Friday/Saturday night. As for the Ram - if it is the guys from Dog and Whistle that have taken it over, then good luck to them! I never drank in the Ram in the 7 years that I have lived here because it never looked terribly inviting.

Hi Mchardy24 For a decent bottle of wine without thumping music or a requirement to dine, I would suggest Wetherspoon or the Salisbury. Both have pretty decent wine lists. Baroosh has a similar wine list to the Salisbury (both being McMullen's pubs) but it may be a bit loud on a Friday or Saturday evening.

Whilst I agree The Ram, was, fun under Henry's period I have also had some excellent times, when it was run by Matt, and more recently,when it was managed by Steve and Hannah, It was its traditional pub feel that I enjoyed if that means its an " old mans pub " Then maybe that's cos I'm over 50 , in fact I had my 50 th in the ram and it was an excellent night, as was many of the parties there. Attended by all ages. I just hope that this. Is not the end of its traditional pub feel and it goes the same way as so many other so called trendy bars that are now commonplace in our town. Like I said we shall just have to wait and see.
