Just out of interest, how many of the people that post on this site, were actually born, bred and still live in this area (Hertford and Surrounding Villages, not Ware)?

Born and bred in Yorkshire, migrated down here via Norwich, Ottawa and Cambridge...Hertford feels the most like home of all the places I've lived and I don't ever want to leave.

Born in Hertford County Hospital, when it still had a maternity ward in 1965, still live in Hertford and work in London. Do I get a long service award?????

Pretty much, but don't quite tick all the boxes. I grew up mainly in Hertford, moved around a bit with work, and then returned.

Co.Antrim, Leics, Worcestershire, Herefordshire, New York, Washington DC, Ware, Enfield, Hertford... I've almost been in Hertford longer than any other single place now so it's kind of a 2nd home. Mr.Batty is Hertford bred and both junior Battys were born here. I'm getting the wanderlust again but Mr B is keeping me grounded. Joby that stuff about Hertford is so touching!

I'm a bit of a newbie. Started off in Finsbury Park followed by 15 years in Cheshunt which was heaven compared to Finsbury Park. 10 years in Hertford now and wouldn't swap it for the world.

Bucks, Leics, Edinburgh, York, Hoddesdon, Hertford. Been here for about a year and also think it's great! Mrs. Newcomer came up from London and hence appreciates it even more!

Moved here in 1974. Lived in rented accomodation until 1978, and then had to spend a few months in B&B in Harlow :-(. Managed to return to Hertford :-) and claw onto the bottom wrung of the housing chain (as it was then, but very desirable res now). Like several other posters I do not intend to move anywhwere else.

Victor, why not Ware? I was born there, went to school and college there and eventually lived there. My parents lived in Hertford and I am now back too - I wouldn't want to live anywhere else [:)]

I lived up north in Liverpool til 2003, and then moved down to Hertford. Its certainly a differnt way of life to Liverpool

A quick scan at the responses to this thread reveals that the majority of contributers were born outside Hertford (about 16/6 ratio) So, does this tell us that... 1) People born here take less of an interest in local issues and/or discussing them online, or 2) People born here actually get on with some work during the day and don't spend loads of time on the internet like us outsiders? I reckon I know which one my money's on...[:D]

It would be interesting to know how many of those who have influence locally (Town Council, County Council, etc) were born and bred in the areas they represent.

I think that people, who have lived in the area for longer will be able to spot the pros and cons of change, better than someone that has only lived there for a while. Saying that, someone that has witnessed the same type of changes in other areas, may have a better understanding. The bottom line is Hertford has changed considerably in the last 10 years, let alone longer! Some people will say that Hertford was better the ways it was, some better now. I started this thread, so you all may have assumed that I was born in Hertford, which is infact incorrect, although I have lived here since 1985, went to School here from 1980 and infact have always lived in the local area. I believe the majority of the changes have enhanced Hertford not spoilt it. We havegood nightlife, 2 parks, country side a stones throw away, 2 train lines into London, 15 mins from M25, 10 mins from A1, 15 Mins M11. Both Stansted and Luton are close enough to get to bar far away enough not to bother us. The only downside, is all you outsiders have moved here and bumped the house prices through the roof!!!!!!

Born down the road in Waterford in 1966, moved to Bengeo in 1971, left for 5 minutes to move in with my wife in Wheathampstead, moved with her back to Bengeo, moved within Bengeo. Considering moving within Bengeo at some point in the future. Might get adventurous and move across Hertford. We have to accept that change is inevitable e.g. there are more cars on the roads so my street is going to get busier, and embrace it. I agree with Vic that most changes have enhanced Hertford.

I've found from speaking to some of my friends who were born and bred in Hertford that they do not appreciate the joys of Hertford as much as those of us who found Hertford after having lived elsewhere. Perhaps familarity sometimes blinds people to just what they have to appreciate.

This is right Ray by the Beane, but also us "born and bred" can also appreciate even 5 years ago things were better. Its not going forward for me that I cannot get into a lot drinking establishments except queueing to get the evil eye from men pretending to be doormen and then never getting served at the bar!!!! I object to queueing for alcohol. Yep I know buy it at Tesco instead, but I really used to enjoy Friday/saturday nights out in Hertford, now I avoid them like the plague, I go out midweek and enjoy it much more.. except the hangovers!!!!

Anyone remeber the mobile grocer that used to go around Sele Farm, Grumpy bloke as far as I remember and sacrey - but that's when kids respected the adults [:(] Note from Admin: Please post as new topic

Reg is as far as I know still around selling veg off his trailer down towards Crouchfields. (Always used to get smartened up when he came in the Woodman) Sorry Admin - off topic maybe Hertford Characters…? CP Note from Admin: Please post in Community Forum
