Chris there are some footpaths signposted in the area but I've never tried them so can't comment on that aspect however there is the option of crossing the A414 to the B1502 and turn right towards Hertford Heath - wouldn't take too long and is a safe enough ride. Other rides are available all around Hertford such as the Cole Green Way, Great North Way and my particular favourite is the Ayots Greenway which can be an extension of the CG way. There are also some good rides to/around Puckeridge, Buntingford, Roydon, etc. that are mainly on road but with plenty of off road options along the way. Edit: You can access Broxbourne woods quite easily from HH - just take the main path through the woods on the heath (Elbow Lane - the old Roman road).

Looking at a map, it appears there's a couple of paths to Hertford Heath - one through Foxholes Business Park and one from the main roundabout . I haven't tried them myself so don't know if they are bikeable / bridleways or what. You can try the OSL website http://www.getamap.ordnancesurveyleisure.co.uk/ , it's a bit ropey at times but useful just for finding out where the paths are. The best 16 quid I ever spent was a custom printed map from Ordnance Survey centred on my postcode. I use it mostly for runs/walks, you can get the 25k or 50k scale (nb. I am not promoting them, just saying.)

From the A10/A414 roundabout I would recommend pushing the bike around the edge of the roundabout crossing the entrance to macdonalds and the slip up off the A10. You can then step down to a byway that goes across to Hoe Lane, turn right there up to the B1502 right onto that for a few yards and then up Downfield lane to Hertford Heath Green. Alternatively you can push around the edge a bit more and turn straight onto the B1502 and then right into Downfield Lane The paths up from Foxholes to Hertford Heath all involve footpaths and so are not available to bikes.

There is a footpath on the south side of the A10/414 roundabout off Stansted Road that leads to Hertford Heath. When you reach Hertford Heath, proceed South along London Road, you can then take Elbow Lane, this is more of a track than a road. This will lead you to lots of tracks around Broxbourne Woods. You can eventually make you way back to Hertford either via Brickendon or down in to Broxbourne and along the River Lea. If you pop into Highway Cycles down Hartham Lane they have cycling maps of the area I think, they are free too. I noticed them on the counter a few weeks ago.

I am unsure of the law relating to cycles and public footpaths, so this may be a non-starter - but one option (not straightforward due to obstacles) would be to go down Stansted Road, left up to the top of Foxholes Ave and then pick up the footpath which goes past the playground. Follow the path which will take you through the tunnel under the A414 and onto Foxholes Farm. Past the barns/pigs and follow the field edge which brings you to a kissing gate on the B1197 just by the Hertford Heath war memorial. Obviously the kissing gate would have to be negotiated with your bike plus a couple of stiles en-route too.

The short answer is - you can cycle on bridleways / byways but not on footpaths. The long answer is I've seen a lot of cyclists both on footpaths and on bridleways round here, and everyone seems to get on fine.

Yep. I'm very much of the opinion that pedestrians take priority on a footpath, but I wouldn't say no to using one if that was an option. Perfectly happy to slow down or stop for people on foot and stiles aren't an issue.

Found the underpass that takes you from Foxholes towards the farm over the weekend. It's a brilliant link. I didn't venture any further due to bike issues, but looks like you could do the whole thing from Vixen Drive across to Broxbourne Woods on single track. Just beware of the bull in the first field. ;)

The path onwards up to Hertford Heath from Foxholes Farm is pretty much a field edge. I run it now and then and it's quite overgrown with long grass etc at this time of year, but don't let that stop you!
