Virgin Broadband - Engineer

We're jiggling our house around and would like to move the broadband access point from one room to another (yes we have wireless, but would like to move the actual access point), could anyone recommend an engineer to do this or is tell me if this a job solely for Virgin themselves. Thanks

I've no doubt this is best left to a Virgin engineer, as in my experience they are actually good at their jobs. However...arranging the work for a convenient time, assuming you can contact the right person and understand what they are saying, then stopping them from tying you into another contract running from the date of the change and also selling you add ons etc. is another matter. On the other hand, whilst on the phone to arrange the change, you could ask for any customer loyaly discounts going. You may get a new iPad or something. Worth a try.

While you may be tied to a Virgin engineer I'd be wary of their work practices. In my old house they put the grey box outside, ran a wire up the wall and threw cables over the roof to enable a connection to the TV box which was at the back of the house. I had no idea what they'd done until I checked later. I complained by phone and Virgin said the engineers are limited in what they are able to do, restricted by the property. A few years later I rented the house out and the tenant wanted to change the layout of the Virgin installation. Not a problem until I saw that the engineers had run thick black cable all over the house, round doors, up the stairs. They take the shortest and quickest possible route. In my new house I got the grey box installed and the various termination boxes inside and asked the engineers for the cable so I could the job myself. Hence all the cables are discreet and I have it just how I like it. Another thing..........while you're at it ask for updated equipment. You may have old models and they can give you a new tv box and controller, usually gratis. Another thing to do, even if you want to remain with Virgin and have no intention of moving from them, tell them you are seriously considering Sky and BT. You'll probably get your tariff cut. Or you can use that as a bargaining chip if they try to charge you for an engineer.

When I "upgraded" (to actually reduce my monthly bills via a discount) from my old ntl modem and separate wireless router to the Virgin hub box thingy I re-sited it myself downstairs (nearer the entry point) rather than in my office upstairs using a bit of cable I bought at Maplins. When the new hub turned out to be slower than the previous arrangement when it should have been ten times faster I 'phoned Virgin who did some "on-line" tests (to no avail) so an engineer was booked for the next morning! Just before he arrived I moved the hub four feet to the right and cured all the issues. I 'phoned again to cancel the engineer but they sent him anyway and all my cabling was upgraded with various filters and boosters and I no longer have a cable running up my stairs. All free of charge and with a reduced monthly bill - result! Not suggesting you report a fictitious fault to achieve similar results as this would be dishonest.........

My old router arrangement was better than the virgin new hub box, service last 10 days has been awful.

My wifi from Virgin is very slow and in and out in Bengeo. My son also has problems with it down in Riversmeet. Not sure exactly what we're all paying for?

Thanks for all the replies. Off topic I know but wrt poor Wifi if you've got a Superhub (1) then the best thing you can do is upgrade the firmware to R37, actually the best thing you can do is buy a separate router from the likes of Asus or Netgear and run the Superhub in modem mode. Virgin's Superhub 2 will be out soon which may solve a lot of the problems of the poorly specced Superhub 1 - you may be able to get a freebie SH2 by threatening to leave as Ewoowar says above. Other "fixes" you could look into is running a network/wifi via powerline adaptors (using your electrical circuit to carry data).

For poor wifi I'd recommend you buy a Devolo dLANŽ 200 AV Wireless N Starter Kit. I've been using one for 3 years and its absolutely brilliant. The supplied hub then just becomes a router to pass through to the adapters. It solved all my problems of weak wifi signal in certain areas of the house. I can also get full strength wifi signal in the garden and stream my music etc outside.
