Violent Crime Figures in Hertford
Good to see Hertford crime figures down9% but surprised at 231 reported violent crimes in the 12mth period. This seems a lot for a place like Herford and makes me wonder how safe the Town Centre is in the evenings, particularly at weekends? I do see some dodgy characters about that I would steer well clear of. Am I worrying unnecessarily?

As long as you retain the judgement to "steer clear of dodgy characters" you should have little to worry about!

The Home Office defintion of violent crime is "Violent crimes are those where the victim is intentionally stabbed, punched, kicked, pushed, jostled, etc. or threatened with violence whether or not there is any injury"
This covers a very wide range of activity from pretty trivial to very serious and I would imagine that much of that 231 are at the more trivial end. Also 231 is a crime every 36 hours which when you consider that Hertford has c26,000 residents is pretty low.
If you steer clear of certain spots in the town centre after 11pm in the town centre you will be very unlikely to see or experience violent crime in Hertford.

Another way to look at it is less than 4.5 per weekend, which is when the town's population is swelled by 100s of young people coming into the town with the sole intention of drinking themselves stupid. Perhaps that's a very Daily Mail way of looking at it but it's not many incidents really. If you don't go looking for trouble then Hertford is a safe place to be, even after 11pm on a Friday and Saturday night.

It is a relatively low figure. Though I spoke to a man yesterday whose son was attacked with a metal bar the night before at the roundabout by the car showroom. He was talking to some lads who it would seem knew the attacker.

And a serious attack in Sele Farm today....still have to keep things in perspective. Just a shame that we have people who act in this way.
