Shop front shutters
A question to those in the know,.... assumming the town centre is some sort of conservation area, how is it that some shops are allowed to have full shutters covering then at night. I know we have some window breaking now and again but i think we all agree that the last thing we want is a town centre with all the shops shuttered up. If there is some thing that says shutters cannot be used in the town centre why are certain shops getting away with it?

It depends on the grade listing of the building,not its location.

Thanks Del.. does seem a bit strange though that a shop in an old building can't have them and a shop next door in a newer building can. More research needed from me on this i think.

If I was a shop owner in town, I would put one up and argue the toss later. The mother of a mate of mine owned a shop in Bengeo that had regular break ins and broken windows. She had planning turned down for shutters, which I find amazing considering the row of shops are particulally ugly anyway.

All I ever want to say on this issue is that when Mrs Sloop and I ran an Off Licence we had about 64 separate panes of glass in the front window. Every now and then one would get kicked in - nothing personal, just someone wanted a bottle of something after hours. But! ... it is not the planners who get woken up at some unearthly hour in the morning by an alarm company/police and have to go down and make sure the premises are safe. First one in is always the shopkeeper not the local bobby.

Yes and I bet the local councilor that put the kybosh on you having shutters doesnt get woken up in the wee hours everytime theres a break in or smashed window.
I would lay money that if they were, we would see a lot more shutters.

Didn't one shop say that they couldn't getb insurance for windows these days, and that some shop window replacements can run to four figures? If so, then you wouldn't need too many smashed windows to put some of the smaller shops out of business.

Windows kicked in, glass everywhere, shop displays ransacked, merchandise stolen, shop owners woken, police time used ect ect ect.
Shop owners tend to clean off graffiti and posters from their shutters, plus its pretty difficult to to paint/post on the mesh shutters.

I would imagine you can get anti-graffti coating on the shutters as you do on feeder pillars

Point to make here !! I am talking about full steel shutters that cover the whole of the outside of the shop.
Also why do whe have all the cameras around town for?
Or are we to walk home through the shuttered fronts that by day are our shops ? Has anyone been into Cheshunt or Waltham Croos at night? Looks lovely, row after row of shutteres covered in grafitti and faded posters ! Is that what we want in Hertford ? If so we give into those who want the streets for no good at night....

I think you missed my point though. You do not have to use Full steel shutters.

I agree Victor, the internal meshed type are fine but those huge steel door type look so final.. As if all hope has be given up.
