Thread removal requests
We have recently had a request from a local business owner asking us to remove the thread discussing the business. This is despite the many favourable comments about the business.
The owner's objection was that it was not right that people should use a public discussion board to publicly discuss the business without the owner's permission.
This follows two other requests over the last year asking us to remove discussions about specific individuals, activities or incidents.
None of the threads involved have been removed as they comply with our Acceptable Use Policy and we have no reason to believe that any comments are libellous.
For information, we do have access to, and have taken legal advice where necessary.

....and there's the sound of everyone hurrying off to the Shopping section to work out who it is.

Another example of just how self-destructively insecure and controlling some wannabe business folk can be.
Compare and contrast to the example set by Lussmanns of how to respond to public criticism (even and perhaps especially, when the brickbat is unwarranted) and emerge with reputation enhanced.

"(even and perhaps especially, when the brickbat is unwarranted) and emerge with reputation enhanced."
In your opinion of course?

In your opinion of course?
I think most people would take that as a given.

Once again you are trying to talk for me .... or for 'most' people ... and its that arrogance that I find disturbing. Everyone is entitled to an opinion and I will give mine quite openly but I don't ever assume that I'm talking for other, or 'most', people.

I have to confess to being mystified by your remarks or why you have taken exception to EoT's post. Are you sure you've not misread it?
What I believe he is saying is that however unfairly a comment about an establishment might be interpreted, if the proprietor of the business deals with it in a calm, dispassionate and understanding way, it can enhance the reputation of the establishment being commented on.
In the case of the opening thread, a business appears to have attempted to close down any discussion whatsoever, regardless of whether the comments are positive or otherwise, simply because the comments were not solicited or published by the business itself.

Yes, you apparantly had a poor experience in Lussmanns about 4 years ago - we get it.
Anyhow, back on topic, I wonder who the recent complainant is - do they serve spaghetti?

Leo I wasn't going on about that particular issue and didn't mention it in my response so its a bit ridiculous to claim that is the reason for my post - my issue here is that EoT seems to be responding for 'most' people when I believe its his/her opinion whether or not the brickbat was unwarranted and whether or not the reputation emerged enhanced. When questioned about this the only response was that most people would take that as a given ... I'm not worried about the particular issue as its about individual tastes and preferences and if you care to go back through the threads I don't contribute unless I have recent experiences, I'm just trying to point out that EoT is speaking for himself, certainly not for me and perhaps not for 'most people'.
I actually fully agree with the first statement and admin's response to the letter. It is important that opinions are given about local businesses on local forums and I've visited many establishments having read opinions on this forum and admire the business owners who come on here to state their case. I may not always agree with it but that's the whole idea of forums and at least I can put forward a counter opinion if I want to - in this case all I've done is point out that the second statement made by EoT contains some statements that are an opinion and not a matter of indisputable fact.

Golden as Steve supposed, you have misunderstood.
My post was my opinion and no-one else's, as are all posts. Even posts arrogantly asserting they are speaking for everyone. Which none of mine ever do. I express my arrogance in other ways.
The "given" was in response to your terse one-line post, and acknowledged that I thought most people would recognise that I was expressing my opinion and no-one else's.
I was careful to include "most" because, well...there's always one isn't there?

My interpretation of EoT's response was simply that most people reading his post would have taken it as a given he was giving his opinion only. I think you might have misinterpreted it.

"you have misunderstood"
That is your opinion too I assume - no 'may' or 'perhaps' but a statement of absolute fact? Maybe its just me?

It seems to me that this should be an opportunity to "educate" the business owner on social media! They clearly do not understand how these things work. With a bit of guidance they could turn the position around and massively improve the face of their business.
Funnily enough, I'm available if they want to chat :) And I know others with suitable expertise who could also advise in this area.
Any business that isn't operating in social media in some way, whatever their service/product is missing out.
