Don't think we're a "clone" town, but possibly a "border". There are enough independent traders in town and the chains don't really seem to have a stranglehold on the place (especially the fashion chains.) Plus we have McMullens, whatever you think about their beer they are synonymous with Hertford and as such form part of the unique commercial character of the town.

Absolutely not. We have plenty of independents and small chains. And how many towns can boat a fishmongers these days!?

I hope not, but then I think our Council tried most of the time to make sure shops had fronts to them in "keeping of the style of the town". Some kept more in it than others, but have to say I hope we don't become a clone.. I'd have to move...

Hertfords not a clone! At least, not yet!
But many towners would love some of the big chains to come here!

Agreed - and this is fine as long as the balance between chains/independents is maintained. You definitely need both - whenever my wife wants to buy clothes she has to go to Watford/Brookfield etc where there are decent women's fashion chains. That can't be good for Hertford.
