Oh My Cod

From the outside it looks as if it is more a kebab shop than a traditional fish and chip shop , am I right ?

Yes - definitely a wider selection. Only tried the chips so far - OK.

They are, at least made from taters (in chippy style) as opposed to frozen options from the other kebab emporia in town (even the excellent Bosphorus).

What planning permission? - I thought it already was a take-away food premises?

They saw them take it out of the fridge before adding the batter.

That is not proof. My OH has a Fish and Chip shop and he has frozen fish delivered twice weekly. It is then defrosted overnight and put in the special fish fridge. If you walk into his shop and order cod and chips, you will see him get what looks like fresh fish out of the fridge. And to wade in even more, his fish is taken from the barents sea where the quotas have increased because there are too many fish there and they are turning cannibalistic. It is then frozen within 4 hours of being caught. Where is the fresh fish taken from? The North sea which has a over fishing problem? And how long from being caught until it gets to the shop? To be honest, in a blind taste test, I defy anyone to choose 'fresh' over frozen. Most people either cannot tell the difference or choose the frozen. You simply would not batter fish that is still frozen and fry it, it won't work.I bet they are using frozen fish.

I paid a visit the other night. Cod was good, nice light batter and no bones. Chips were average, probably sitting there for some time so a bit on the dry side. It did seem a little chaotic - 4 customers present, plus people ringing in with telephone orders. Got the impression that they haven't got their ways of working quite nailed down yet - what order to do things in etc. But overall OK.

So it doesn't really matter then. You're either eating frozen fish from the Barents (where there are loads of fish) or, possibly, fresh fish from the overfished North Sea and we are too stupid to tell the difference anyway.

I think the use of the word 'stupid' is a bit extreme. You wouldn't call someone stupid for not knowing the difference between Pepsi and coke yet they are different. For me, knowing that the food is sustainable does matter but for others this is less important.

You're right - ignorance does not directly translate into stupidity. I would be hard pressed to vouch for the origins of any food once processed and cooked. On the sustainability issue it is a quandary. Frozen fish from the Barents may be sustainable in terms of fish stocks but may be less so in terms of the environmental impact of its transport to Hertford. Walking to the chippy instead of jumping in the car may not be sufficient to offset the difference.

Tried this out last week and found the fish to be decent but the chips very dry. Not necessarily a bad thing but not to my liking. It is close enough for me to walk there and back and for the food not to be cold by the time I get home. The service was a bit chaotic but perhaps they'll sort that out in time. Went to our old favourite up a Sele Farm on the way home last night and the fish was superb. Much tastier all round. The chips were a bit greasier but not so much that you couldn't handle them. Sort of what you'd expect from a chippy. Whether or not the fish is sustainable or frozen I've no idea but it's certainly my shop of choice.

Ah but - how would we know? "To be honest, in a blind taste test, I defy anyone to choose 'fresh' over frozen. Most people either cannot tell the difference or choose the frozen." Sele Farm chippy also gets my vote currently.

I had some fish and chips from here last night with my gf and the food was really good. Crisp batter, fresh fish and very nice chips. It also does kebabs which for me isn’t usually a good sign, however I was very impressed. The premises was also spotless with people scrubbing in the background. Wallys and mushy peas we also well received.

We had Cod (10 minute wait for Haddock, so swerved it) chips and mushy peas from here last night. Was ok but all a bit dry and bland, wont be rushing back. Don't have fish and chips very often but is £4.50 expensive for a piece of fish?

The best fish and chips come from Yorkshire and are fried in dripping - end of argument. So, making allowances as I have to for the local offerings I gave it a go tonight and I'm afraid to say I was totally underwhelmed. The haddock was ok but the batter lacked flavour. Chips were dry and maybe I had the last of the batch because the portion I got seemed to consist of all the small scraps. Didn't expect to say it, but on this evidence the Frying Pan is better. Can't see me rushing back anytime soon.

That goes without saying, hence I only have fish and chips south of the Pennine way once or twice a year. Then i'm always disapointed. Once again been proven right what a shame. (but good news for my thighs, waistline etc)!

Being also an expatriate northerner I can agree with all of this (although the ability of "authentic" fish and chips to congeal when cold due to the use of the aforementioned animal fat can be less appealing). At the risk of being censured/censored by admin' I will say the best "southern softy" fish and chip experiences I have had were at Nautilus in West Hampstead and (not quite as good but posher) Sea Shell in Lisson Grove. They are both still going strong and would qualify for a "nice day out from Hertford" if you're looking for a justification for this posting!

'End of Argument'.......one has to disagree with the two members from the independant republic of Yorkshire. 1. Joseph Malin opened the first recorded combined fish-and-chip shop in London in 1860 or in 1865, while a Mr Lees pioneered the concept in the North of England, in Mossley,Manchester, in 1863. 2.National Fish and Chip Shop Awards 2013, Independent Takeaway Fish and Chip Shop of the Year Award - 1st Place The Bay, Stonehaven, Aberdeenshire 2nd Place Simpsons Fish And Chips Cheltenham 3rd Place Hanburys, Torquay. When I worked in central London, Friday lunch was often purchased from the Fryer's Delight on Theobald Road, opposite Holborn Police Station. They use beef dripping, which gives a fantastic smell and taste to the food. It was always busy, particularly with London's cabbies - more Knees-up Mother Brown than Ilkley Moor bar t'at, but many regional accents were heard at the counter. Locally, whilst Carleys at Sele Farm is acceptable, my favourite requires the passport to be drawn out in order to visit the dark side for a rewarding queue outside Wrights in Ware. If only they did mushy peas.

Did you emigrate dahn sarf from the wild and windswept moors, where flocks of cod and haddock wander the dales?
[?][?] Last I heard Yorkshire possessed a substantially lengthy coastline including fishing ports (although parts of it are falling into the North Sea).

I think I may have watched the programme a couple of times in the 1970s. I remember the irritating and raucous laughter of several old ladies in the front seat of the live auditorium that was delicately shoved through the speakers of my television set so I must have turned it over. I still do not understand the "anyone's" quote. It doesn't make sense.

Yes, it's a new shopfront, installed in the last few weeks. Planning permission for a new shopfront was granted in February 2013. However, the new shopfront is completely different from the one in the approved planning application.

If it's not what's in the plans then it doesn't have planning permission and they'll have to either revert to what it was before or install the approved shopfront.

Sorry but yes. My sensibilities are clearly less finely attuned to the relative merits of various fast food emporia frontage. As is clear from earlier in this thread I didn't really notice the difference in the first place. Feel free to make them put it back the way it was I won't be concerned. I will, however, hang my head in shame for such wanton philistinism.[V]
