Can I warn people of Hertford that there has been a spate of shed break ins. We had ours broken in on Sunday night and about 5 sheds in the same road also were broken in last night. There may be more for all I know.

Gill I'm in Cecil road, I have lived here for 10 years and have never had or heard of any crime around here. The area appears to have been targeted as there has been 2 car break ins and a flat burgled also in the past week....I hope they move on soon. Not that I want them to move to other people's property, not even yours steve (as I'm sure you live in the best street in hertford!)

Good luck as they didn't stop at sheds....that was just the start, 5 sheds, two cars, one flat and a house all burgled in one week. All up one road....I have been on to Peter ruffles about switching the street lights on again as this, I feel has contributed to this. Which area on the east side, as this site could help with warning others to be vigilant?!

Like Sister I also feel that the lack of street lighting at night could well be a contributory factor in this recent spate of burglaries but of course can not prove this. However, if anyone is interested there is a petition on the hertsdirect web site urging that the street lights are turned back on over night. Anyone interested might like to sign it. Were all these burglaries during the lights off period? I thought a lot of burglary was opportunistic during daylight hours when no one is in and doors/windows open can more easily be seen.

All during lights out hours and sheds were done while people where in and house and flat done while occupants out overnight. It is down to the police to switch the lights back on, council review will be in June/July time.

Just discovered that despite a new padlock the little sh*ts when back into the shed and came prepared with bolt cutters taking the two (not new, was shaking with anger when I originally posted!) adult bikes. Thankfully left my daughter's second hand bike. Didn't hear it was I was so exhausted having had to take one of my sons to A&E in an ambulance the morning before. So angry. Be warned... they are determined [:(!]

Thanks; we had a visit from the Community Police Officer who gave us a shed alarm. I was quite surprised as we only reported it to 101 and know the bikes have long gone. Mr Policeman advised that Newland Gardens underground car parks have also been targeted of late. All I would recommend is to report break-ins, even if they don't take anything (the first time... grrr!) as it will help target resources.

I sent one of the earlier posters on this thread a pm about this issue and the risk of return thefts. I will post some of the comments more generally now as it seems relevant. Having been the victim of theft from a shed I would advise looking in the local vicinity immediately afterwards as some of the thieves leave the stolen items on local waste land for later collection. This means that any van seen in the area is not seen at the time of the theft and is not associated with the date of the burglary. So check surrounding waste land for goodds left for later collection. Also, do not replace the stolen items or even bother to upgrade security immediately after the theft. It suggests that the stolen items have been replaced, probably with insurance money and therefore with nice new goods, and the thieves will sometimes return to steal the replacements as well. In fact the replacements are more of an enticement than the original goods as they are likely to be new.

My shed alarm is a 14 pound sledge hammer on the inside of the roof and connected to the door, so if anyone breaks in, when they open the door the hammer swings down and ouch!

I do believe the police are still giving free locks on sheds maybe worth inquiring about. We recently had ours re-fitted and windows/doors checked after a burglary.
