It appears that the Herts and Middx Wildlife trust are serious about putting livestock on the North Heath (to keep the vegetation at bay and promote habitat for the Grizzled Skipper - although I remain to be convinced how that works). Stock proof fencing is now complete and a water trough appeared earlier this week. This is a good place to walk my large(ish) but completely harmless/guileless dog off the lead without fear of intimidating those who do not like big dogs near them at all and I suspect this will not be possible with moo cows about? It is not a massive issue as it does not appear that they have the same plans for the south heath? Does anyone know any more/have any views?

Good news! Hopefully it will reduce the number of large dogs that intimidate me when I go for a walk over the Heath.

Grazing the north Heath is a possibility hence why the wildlife trust have installed the water trough. At the moment there is insufficient grass so it is unlikely to happen for the next few years.

My dog, like many others, is not a monster in dimensions or demeanour but is very friendly. I know some people don't like to be approached by dogs (I didn't before I got one of my own) and my only point is that Waterford Heath is far more conducive in this regard than Hartham. Woof!

Judging by a newspaper article the other day, its not dogs that are maiming people out walking but herds of cows. I say keep the dogs on the Heath and put the cows right next to where Bovis Homes want to build 58 properties on Sacombe Road, to give that "rural" feel to visitors!!!![:D]

Question: What is the point of bagging up your dog's poop then leaving it lying around instead of using the bins provided? Although all dog poop should be collected and binned it is far worse to bag it and leave it than just leave it (its biodegradation is severely limited by the bag) so what is the point? Is it a "tidyness" thing? The efficacy of animal waste disposal methods are rarely determined by their aesthetics. Interestingly a council representative pointed out to me that allowing your dog to foul will leave you liable to a fine of £50. Bagging it then leaving it lying around is littering - fine £90! I'm not sure if this is true or sends the right message but..... Please bag it AND bin it!

l have often complained about the habit of tree decorating with poop bags to dog walkers and was informed that some dog owners do this on their way out and pick them up on the way back. l would believe this if the ruddy things weren't still there days later!!!! C'mon dog owners, be responsible for the mess as well as your pet!!

Another grand tour of the heath today punctuated by a train every 2-3 minutes. There must be some serious engineering work going on somewhere as an East Coast Mainline train and I'd swear I glimpsed a Eurostar (or similar) were among the show. On a less positive note the collection of bagged up but abandoned poop remains undiminished capped off by a delightful arrangement of a pink bag and a white bag neatly placed in a bush by the path glowing in the autumn sunshine - how sweet - NOT! Finally - If your interested in making your own cider or sloe gin get in quick.
