Stead and Simpson closing?
Heard a rumour this morning that they are closing in November, not sure if its right anyone else heard anything

My mum and dad said this about a week ago that they had heard this...don't know if it's rent increase issue yet again. Hertford is so depressing with all it's empty shops...really sad :-(

If it's just a rumour then it's pure speculation. Some people see a sign in the window saying "Clearance Sale" and jump to conclusions. Has anyone asked the staff?

if its a coffee shop, hairdressers, barbers, nail bar, chemist, chain restaurant, charity shop, then no....

They may not be what YOU want but if they're filling empty premises and providing employment, isn't that something to cheer about?

On a purely selfish note, when I moved to Hertford I moved here NOT for employment but for my quality of life and enjoyment of my family. More of what farmash has said would not add to my quality of life or my enjoyment......so no, no cheer from me!

True, but more competition will eventually lead to casualties further down the line. There has to come a period when the market becomes too saturated.

As I said only a rumour but from a reliable source................when I was little the town was full of shoe shops but you had a job getting a cup of tea or coffee just shows my age I guess.....

I've been in to S&S and they are indeed closing on 17th November. The staff are being made redudant. Stead & Simpson have closed a number of branches recently, blaming poor performance and rising costs.

Isn't S&S one of the longest running 'same-name' retail shops in Hertford town centre? (ie not changing ownership name like Lavell's did to become Martin's).
Halfords and Hertford Cameras are the only other ones I can think of that must come close but there must be more.
