Just recently we have received calls claiming to be from Windows asking us to change settings on our pc as part of a fix. I assume they are fake and usually hang up fairly quickly but are they? Anyone else receiving calls like these?

Yes this has been going on a long time. Some people are still caught out by it so do warn anyone you know, especially any one new to the world of computers. Only thing about doing that is that the first time it happened it sounded like the phone rang back to him and I guess charging me for the call. To be honest that's what made me smell a rat.

I love getting these calls and keeping them hanging on for as long as possible, they usually get quite abusive. I was once told that if I had a f*****g phone I should expect to get f*****g calls and that I was wasting his f*****g time, which I was of course. That's customer service for you! And when I was asked to "open Windows" that was a whole new line of time wasting.

Do warn people these are still going on just had one. They may be hoping to catch people who get their first computer for Christmas so just warn anyone you know who may be caught. I told her I thought it was time they gave up this scam as everyone was now aware of it and she put the phone down on me !!................

Had one yesterday and they were adamant it was not a scam. They were from Microsoft Technical and my computer had downloaded a virus that was spamming their computers but they could fix this for me. I told them I knew it was a scam and put the phone down on them.

The best answer to them is "Oh really that's interesting as I don't have a computer" true in my aunt's case when she got one of these calls!

Mt 15 year old told me I should have told them it was a MacBook. I just want to ask them how they can sleep at night when they know they have been trying to scam people, obtaining money by deception. How would their mother's feel although I know this will not make a bit of difference. I think next time (if there is one), I shall try and have some fun, asking them to hold on whilst I try and sort it all the time saying random stuff like "What does this light do?" and "Where does this blue wire go?".
