I'm just wondering.........if I want to sit at the bench by the bus stop near the theatre is it compulsory to drink strong lager?

Seems to be the case most times I pass this location.

Is there a public drinking ban in the castle grounds?(alcohol drinking) So,as this bench is outside of that area, then, this is why, perhaps?

Anyway,it is tradition that the benchs around the castle are used this way, going back to the 1980s,Danny and his fellow reprobates were always on these benchs [:)]

Ah.. The Hertford Wine & Cheese Society; they really should have got that lottery grant...

Actually if you read the signs, drinking is perfectly legal anywhere in Hertford because the East Herts Council signs say that it's an alcohol-free zone 'in contravention of the Criminal Justice Act'. Have a look. I'm not kidding. I think the ****wits meant to say 'in compliance'.

Is this a record? On Saturday afternoon the Hertford Wine and Cheese Society had a full meeting........three on the bench, five next to the bench in the bus stop and one staggering next to it holding a can. Nine members. A splendid showing. And it must have been a good meeting as on Sunday there was but a sole member at the bus stop who asked me, "Where's the f*cking taxi?", as I walked past. By Monday they had moved on to a patch by the remains of St Mary the Less. Only five of the club but still a good turnout.

One day last week I wanted to catch the 333 bus from the stop by the Castle to Bengeo. It was raining, and the members of the cheese & wine society occupied the entire bus shelter. They are pretty canny about drinking alcohol. A number of them had Lucozade type bottles, but I don't think it was Lucozade in the bottles!

quote:I noticed them by the remains on Monday too. Perhaps they were discussing a way to make the new restoration blend in by application of some uniquely produced solvents?

Without wanting to sound like an avid Daily Mail reader - how do these characters afford to be able to sit around all day drinking?

quote:Isn't that the point? Drinking is about the cheapest vice there is. One can get very, very dronk for about a twentieth of the cost of a normal night out with friends. 6 cans of strong lager for £5 and that's your social life.

quote:After all these years Danny is still mentioned; many (most) of us will die and be forgotten, but Danny's name still comes up. The lesson is, if you want to be remembered in Hertford, don't become a Mayor, or a Town Councillor, hit the bottle big time. That will make your name stick around. So here's to Danny, famous in life and in death; long may he be remembered.
