I run a ghost group based in Hertfordshire, and we are looking for new members. We have all the latest technical equipment and investigations in the pipeline. We are looking for dedicated people, interested in ghost investigation, it doesn't matter if you are a believer or a sceptic. Please email me for further information. Many thanks, Danny

The latest 'technical equipment'??? Does it detect leprechauns and fairies as I think I've seen some n Hertford recently.... Or that could have just been something to do with St Paddy's day. Please do share your website details as we could all do with a good laugh!

bit harsh

I don't feel it is harsh. How can you have a piece of 'equipment' that 'detects' something that doesn't exist.... ? It's always struck me as strange that now that everyone has a camera with them all the time (their mobile phone), there is not one genuine photo of an apparition apart from blurry photos that can easily be explained away.

They welcome skeptics, maybe you should join and then make an informed judgment. From my very limited experience on such groups, I understand that many are formed of skeptics whose main aim is to disprove reports of hauntings and find logical explanations. Each to their own[:)]

People who do not beleive in ghosts are not 'skeptics'. They are normal, rational people. Am I a skeptic if I don't beleive something that is patently baloney and only for the gullible....? A bit lit homeopathy.

Ghosts DO exist. The fact that this discussion is happening is proof that ghosts exist. What is up for investigation is the nature of ghosts; are they physical manifestations, quirks of human psychology or something else? It's a false logic to deny absolute existence because one possibility of existence seems implausible. As for what is and who is normal and rational, again the existence of this discussion is evidence that there is plenty yet to be understood on that matter.

Wow they DO exist??? Cool, along with unicorns, fairies, little green men and Winnie the Pooh (actually, i've seem winnie the pooh at disneyland so discount that one)?? Where is the evidence? There is none. Where are the scientific papers that have been independently verified? There are none. Enoughofthat, you should read about Bertrand Russell's celestial teapot? Just saying something exists is not good enough. You have to prove it.

You're taking and making this too personal, that's a common trait of black and white thinkers. If you really thought the notion of ghosts was as absurd as you imply then what have you to lose by someone else embarking on an investigation that can only conclude you are right? The problem with declaring a position before all the evidence is allowed to be considered is, that from that point on, you're only open to evidence that supports the premature conclusion. Indeed the most vain of premature absolutists would stifle further debate, preferring to be wrong but seen as right rather than risk appearing foolish.

There is no evidence that "God" exists either.. but... I rest my case! I know, because its a fact and a film was made about it, that each human's "soul" weighs 21grams (title of film too) and when we depart this earth ALL humans are 21 grams lighter.. I do believe that there are things we cannot explain and more than just the body we live in but I think we on the forum cannot really prove or disprove these theories.. not in my lunchbreak anyway! Ghosts, the human soul, god(s).... It's amazing what people will beleive in. The power to deceive yourself is one of mankinds fundamental flaws.....

Reply ID 87266

Rather than a flaw, there is some evidence that self deception provides certain evolutionary advantages. but if you've already made your mind up... ;0)

Beliefs can be ludicrously improbable, even seemingly impossible, whereas a theory has to be based on something which is, at least, likely. God and ghosts may seem too improbable for logical scientific study. However, the reasons why some people believe, despite that improbability and report ghosts, or God, or flying saucers, is a study in itself, though the answer is more likely to be found in human psychological evolution. Maybe the ghostbusters could use the same aperatus as God detecting equipment. To search for something for which there is no evidence at all, takes determination and certainly, belief.

My first thought was how sinister the title. To join a "Ghost group", one would first have to be dead, surely.:D

I understand that people have different points of view, I respect all beliefs and all belief systems.I'm not one to disparage or tread on another persons fundamental right to their own persuassion regarding ghosts or any other metaphysical beliefs .I treat everyone with the upmost respect and would very much appreciate it if you afforded me the same. as for your lack of belief in a spirit world, well that's fine but please treat my beliefs with the same respect as I do yours.

No. Not all beliefs are worthy of 'respect'. Describing someone who is rational and intelligent as 'lacking belief in a spirit world' is simply ridiculous..... I will say again that it is down to the superstitous to prove their beliefs (which they can't) rather than others to disprove them.

Isn't it more a case of respecting the Ecto1's right to have a certain belief as opposed to respecting the belief itself? The two are surely very different.

Belief comes from 'within'. I saw two planes cross in the sky last week. That was my Dad saying 'love ya' and we always look out for his kisses. It's interpretation. [:)]

I'm sorry, my response was meant for the post previous to yours Razor. And I totally agree with your sentiment, but sadly some people are so entrenched in their own opinions that it becomes impossible for them to accept any one elses, or even to see them from a respectful point of view.

I think beliefs that do no harm are ok. It is unfortunate that for most there is someone to exploit the believer. I can see no harm in ghost hunting though. It's not exploitative in the way clairvoyance or religion is and might be fun, if that is your belief. The human mind has the capacity to self-entertain and imagine. There is probably a good reason for that capability, though it's far too late at night for me to try and calculate it. Good luck Ecto1. There may well others who share your hobby and they will find you if they read this thread, even if they don't put their hands up right away.

Hang on a minute. I haven't read anything here that says Ecto1 feels one way or the other. It seems so bloody common here that someone will post something and people will just be contrary for the sake of it. One poster in particular does that to me quite often, and because their IQ is a bit low they don't even get the point of my posts most of the time. It really pisses me off. These people just come across as idiots and frankly, it bores me to the point it really puts me off contributing, but I have to stick my neck out this time. Granted, it's only a very small minority, but it only takes one to put a real damper on the whole forum. Anyway, I am very skeptical, I don't believe in gods, ghosts, UFOs (as in aliens) or anything like that in the slightest, but I haven't read anything here that tells me Ecto1 sways one way or the other. I haven't looked through their website too deeply but I can't see anything there that tells me they believe in ghosts, just that they investigate reports. Did I miss that bit? Intelligent replies - without ad hom attacks - are welcome [:)] Ecto1, I've looked at your equipment list. Now, I know nothing about ghosts, because as far as I'm concerned they don't exist, there's no evidence for them and I've never seen one, but I don't see anything there out of the ordinary. Indeed I could provide the majority of that equipment, aside from the smoke machine (unless I bring my tobacco, which I will anyway), myself. What are your plans for Hertford?

I'm not sure what that link refers to - be it my post, Ecto1's post, or the first paragraph in my post above - but assuming you're referring to my first paragraph in my previous post: I know what a troll is, I've been using Usenet and IRC since I got my first Internet access in 1991 where the term was first coined. What happens here isn't trolling, else the posters would be warned then banned. It's just blinkered idiocy by people that judge others by their own values.

I am a non beleiver although have had a couple of experiences that deny rational explanation. However as I cannot determine any proof they do exist, I have to go with the "they don't exist" brigade. However, I am still open to proof they do exist. I personally don't want to join the group as I have precious little time to pursue my own interests but what harm does it do for this group to exist and try to establish proof even if some of us doubt that will ever happen? I don't beleive in God but would fight for the right of churches to exist. As an aside not sure why people are afraid of ghosts. If they exist aren't they supposed to be made of whisps of smoke or some such? Easily despatched with a good vacuum or extractor fan.

I dont think ghostbusters would have had the commercial success they did if they were forced to carry around a dyson or AEG cooker extractor hood..

I dont want to sway this OT, but I think saying religion IS exploitative is totally wrong. I agree that it CAN be exploitative but there is the world of difference. I dont mean to nitpick Shunt but just wanted to make that point.

Then you need to make that clear, because read in context, and with nothing to go on but an article that makes several points, the post can and probably will be misunderstood, just when you didn't want it to be.

The point I take from the article is that is the responsibility of both the writer and the reader to appreciate that the apparent implication is not necessarily the intended inference. Although in posting it, Steve is clearly on a wind up ;o)

"is designed to be to be" would perhaps be better. Religion being gradually displaced by state, it is diminished in power and increasing scepticism cancels the threats on which the Abrahamic religions are founded. My point was that we are programmed by evolution to believe without evidence in order to facilitate a hierachical structure by surrendering individuality, but the spin off is that we also believe in some random subjects too, such as ghosts and the National Lottery. It's part of being human.

Ghosts are sometimes better than someone (depending who the someone is). However, we ain't so bad here. Even grumpy old sods like me have been known to be welcoming on occasions. Enjoy Hertford. It's a fine place to live.
