Burning smell around Rush Green/Foxholes area

Does anyone know what the burning smell was last night and still smelling this morning? It's not the first time this has happened. You can't open windows of a night as everything reeks!!

I don't know where it's from but it wasn't there when I went to the loo at around 4, but was when I got up at 6.30. If it was smelling smokey at 4 I would have scourering the house for it...

There is a pyre burning at Foxholes Farm, you can see it from the 414, probably that.

I live in the Foxholes/Rush Green area and started to smell it from approx. 7.30pm last night. My husband was even checking all the electrics around the house until he opened the front door to discover the smell was much stronger outside. I still don't know what is but I do know that a few weeks ago a similar smell was caused by a Straw stack fire at Foxholes Farm

Thankyou all. If it is the farm not sure if there is anything we can do. Have emailed council but do far no response!

I quite often notice a burnt smell aound Hertford that reminds me of roasting coffee beans - is it the same as that smell?

Are you sure that's not the brewery?

Steven, I've just realised what a pyre is, not good if it is that!!

Just to back up Steven's story - there's a pile of burning manure just off the A414 between the Rush Green and Hertford Heath roundabouts. These fires are a common occurrence but the farmer could easily make it less bothersome by spreading it around and letting it burn out. I could smell it going past in the car so it must be very distressing to be in the middle of the smoke. I'd suggest you contact the farm first and then if they don't do anything go to environmental health.

No it wouldn't be would it [:)] Big steaming pile of manure. I initially wondered if there was something wrong with my car, but it was just a load a shit.

We were all talking about this at the school gate this morning. A few of us up foxholes way noticed it last night and we laughed as we all said that we were going around and checking indoors etc for burning things until we noticed that the smell was really strong outdoors. The cat came in last night stinking of strong smoke and she still smells of it today. The house is full of it too, it has really permeated.

If it is the muck midden that's burning it was probably spantaneous combustion! The inside of my car smells and the upstairs rooms in our house - I can't get rid of it. The roasting coffee bean smell which I believe is the brewery, as Steve suggests, is quite pleasant compared to this.

There is a lot of burnt hay spread on the field following this http://www.hertfordshiremercury.co.uk/Hertfordshire/Fire-at-Hertford-farm-is-arson-17012012.htm a few weeks ago, Could be some form of internal combustion keeps igniting it. ???

I thought the comments on here regarding the smell of the smoke were over-exaggerating until I saw it this morning and briefly opened the car window whilst I was stopped at the Rush Green roundabout - it hit the back of my throat within about 5 seconds [xx(]

I liked the way that half the audience sseemed to shuffle nervously in their seats and there was a simultaneous intake of breath, as soon as Mark Steel said, "I've been looking through the local forum". Oh, oh!

15 minutes of flame! Funnily enough, this thread has a burning flame next to it too! And to keep it on topic, there was a burning smell tonight around 7 pm when I arrived home in Bengeo. Not the first time either.
