Moving to Hertford / Ware
Hello everyone,
My Girlfriend and me have decided to move out this year and we have been looking at Hertford / Ware / Hoddesden. Unfortunately we dont know that much about any of these areas! I have been reading a few things and thought I would sign up here to get your advice / opinion. Whats it like to live in these places? Are there any places to avoid etc.? Ive heard some horror stories about Sele Farm and the Horns mill estate in Hertford and the King George estate in Ware. Are there any other places you wouldn't recommend?
We have seen a nice place in Cannon Road, Ware. Anyone know what its like around there?

It all really does depend on what sort of place that you need. There is very little family housing around the town of Hertford and therefore often people move to Bengeo (which is very nice). The estates in Hertford are away from the town, some of which have a worse reputation than justified. You pay a premium for Hertford. I have lived here for a year and love it.
You have some lovely bits of Ware, more family housing but good areas and bad areas seem to crisscross more. Nice town with bars and eateries etc. Prices appear less than Hertford but not in all areas. (Gf and friends live here)
Hoddesdon, best value but worst town in the sense that not many people go out in Hoddesdon at night, less shops etc. Far more industrial. I lived in Hoddesdon for 6 years, no problem. You have some nice roads but also some not so nice ones like anywhere. People say Rye House is a bit dodgey. There is also another area which I can remember the name of but it has a street called winters croft that you want to avoid. Lord street (the back end at least) is very nice. The train station to Hoddesdon is Rye house which is about a 15 minute walk from the town center.
They have started doing the town up.

I moved, as North London boy, to Hertford some 18 years ago and it is the best thing I ever did.
Times change and, yes, it has it's problems but I have no regrets.
It does depened on your budget and what you are looking for though.

Hertford - Nicest - most expensive
Ware - Cheaper than Hertford but town not as nice, more choice in housing stock.
Hoddesdon - Don't like it at all (was brought up there) - much cheaper property

Would suggest renting in either Ware or Hertford for a bit until you get to know which bits you like and don't like.

Where are you moving from? As hertfords black spots are extreamly tame compared with other parts of the country! Trust me sele farm and hornsmill are run if the mill estates full of hard working people!! :-)

And bear in mind that the Hertford classification of "nice " or "not nice" bears no comparison to the London equivalents. Its all nice [:D]

I don't get why people say the town centre in Ware is not as nice as Hertford. What makes Hertford a nicer town centre?

Nicer street plan it's not just a single road, it's a more coherent sort of place. Hartham is also a massive asset.

I agree. Ware is centred on a single road whereas Hertford has a 'centre'.

There is no mention if you have children or are planning children or not? I guess children or potential children's needs/schooling needs to be looked at and although I think school league tables help, there's nothing like visiting the places and talking to neighbours. I agree re: renting to see whether the locality is for you or vibrant/quiet enough for your lives going forward. I like Hertford/Bengeo and have local hobbies and interests in and around the town and feel involved in what goes on. I also feel safe walking around. Although its like anywhere else, use your commonsense....[:D]

I moved to Hertford about 12 years and like Ewoowar, it is the best thing I did. I feel safe whereever I go, whatever the time. All schools are good if you will be needing them. Regarding the estates, it's all relative, if that's as bad as Hertford gets, then it aint bad at all.

I grew up in Ware, and have lived in Hertford for 16 years, love them both for different reasons.
As for Canons Road, I don't think it would be any better than King George area. The houses are definately better, bigger gardens, nicer outlook in King Georges than Canons Road.
There are hard working lovely living families living on these estates, and as others have said, alot better than other places in the country.

As the others have said I am sure you would be happy anywhere in Hertford or Ware there are no really bad areas. Some get bad press but that is really all it is, you get an odd bad apple living in any road in any part of any town!
It is more a cse of what type / size of house you want and what your budget is.

I live in Cecil road and im surrounded by key workers....nurses, teachers, fire personel, just to name a few! Affordable housing and in the countryside too, fields all around. :-))
