I just heard a rumour that the post office is moving, can anyone clarify? if so where to?

I know it was being sold off. But I didn't know it was moving. Perhaps the owners have found cheaper premises.

Just stumbled across a document issued by the Post Office dated 21/2/05 and headed "Proposed Branch Change". It says that they're entering into a franchise agreement with a company called Primeco Ltd, who will manage the post office on behalf of Post Office Ltd. The reasons appear to be principally financial. It states:- "We plan to keep Post Office Hertford at this location" (ie 84-86 Fore Street) "Saturday opening hours extended to 5:30pm" "An enhanced range of retail goods including newspapers and confectionery" "We propose to transfer this branch to Primeco Ltd's management in August 2005" "...future plans for the branch include a refurbishment of the premises..." There was also an 8 week consultation period that ended 21/4/05. I don't remember seeing anything in The Mercury about it!

There was something announcing the post office would be privatised and that there were two meetings with bosses, but I think Post Office kept their 8-week consultation pretty quiet - just like the rail company did with the Hertford East timetable one. I have strong reservations over how much can be achieved by taking part in these consultations anyway.

true but it's the same at every post office I go in, WGC, both Stevenage ones, Hertford, Hatfield - all a nightmare1 And they only ever have half the cubicles manned!

Staff = costs. The PO were losing money hand over fist until recently.

It seems that most if not all post offices are being sold off/privatised, sorry I hadn't realised this! must have my head in the sand! I was in WGC post office the other day, the que started from outside! There are massive issues at the moment no matter which one you go to, I was advised that the best thing to do is go to a small village type post office, as they are much quieter. Though I dont think they can do car tax etc sometimes, i'm not sure.

Have you thought of using the sorting office desk up near Abel Smith school? It can be used like a sub-post office (no car tax) and you can nearly always park ouside. It's open longer hours too, with last collection at 6.45pm. There's very rarely a queue, but don't go during school drop-off and pick-up time as the traffic from the school is horrendous to get through.

Oh is that the Royal Mail sorting office? Yes I use that whenever I am collecting/sending parcels, you are right it is very handy the opening hours are very good and the highest number of people I have ever had in front of me was 2!
