Were Bengeo residents aware that Vodafone want to put a new aerial/transmitter on top of the water tower? Asked to post this by a friend as he thought not many people had received the letter about it.

I didn't get a letter, although I have heard some rumours about this. Vodafone already have a (GSM) mast at Hertford North, I suspect this new one is going to be a UMTS one - not sure why they can't put it at the same location as their other one (most other operators with masts in Hertford tend to do this). It *may* be because there is currently a Vodaphone blank spot at Watton, and the new site is to remove that?

there is a campaign against this - can't remember the peoples details, but it's posted in the bengeo coop. As I live only a few doors down from the prospective mast this is a big issue for me. Regardless as to whether there are actually health risks, people are naturally wary, and if nothing else this will affect house prices in the nearby area. Please please sign the petition that is going around - next time i'm at the coop i'll get the details and post them on this website..[:(][:(][:(]

The problem I have with signing a petition like this, is that most of the people on it allow their 10 year old kids to wander round with a mobile phone permanently attached to their ear. Thereby causing much more damage than the mast.

From what I understand it's virtually impossible to stop once they decide to put one up. Any consultation is merely a fop to local accountability and ignored.

Carlos, sadly that does seem to be the way, although I remember the Mercury covering a campaign by residents down in Becketts on the A414 who successfully got Hutchison to look elsewhere. They are the same company looking to put on in Bengeo so maybe that can serve as a precedent.

I don't like these masts any more than you do, but lets get real here, do we all use mobile phones???? Do we buy our kids them???? and next one, do we all get angry when we get no signal???? Hmmm.. I rest my case perhaps if we don't want the masts we should stop using our mobiles!!!!!

I suppose the truth about mobile phones and phone masts will never fully come out...just like overhead power cables. And even if it did no-one would believe it as we have all been made too cynical by the machinations of the political classes.

If I lived near the water tower I would be far more worried about the field strength from the TV transmitters, 4 channels at 5,000 watts a piece = 20,000 watts. I'm no expert but mobile cells are normally in the region of 60 to 120 watts output which is nothing in comparison to 20,000 watts. The TV & mobile phone transmitters both use frequencies which are classifiable as UHF and both are quite directional which means living at the base or near to the base of the tower most of the radiation is going way above your house and you are in affect living in a dead spot, hence the reason some residents have their aerials pointing at crystal palace (which is 1,000,000 watts output). Easy for me to say I know, but if there was any kind of a risk from the water tower radiation then it would of been known about years ago. A leaky microwave oven is far more of a worry [:D]

I don't want to offend anyone here, but this strikes me a bit like the May Day riots (okay maybe not on the same scale....!) where those against capitalism protest wearing their Nike trainers, Levi Jeans, swigging out of a can of coke. For everyone who signs a petition to stop a mast going up - how many of those can honestly say that they do not own a mobile phone, have never bought one for their kids or have never used one on principle? We all moan when we cannot get signal. The mobile phone thing is NOT going to go away and maybe more time, effort and money SHOULD be put into studies looking at the safety aspect of them. The masts ARE going to go up somewhere, at the end of somebodys garden or next to some school and they are only going to increase in number. As Forbes says, a microwave oven is probably far more of a worry, as are other countless items that we all use day in, day out. Yes, I use a mobile phone and yes, I do have concerns about the safety but there are concerns about EVERYTHING nowadays, including the food we eat and the cleaning chemicals we use.

Emma, totally agree, everything has to go somewhere. People will not stop using mobiles - don't know what we did before them but the world would grind to a halt now. Even if just for safety sake mobiles are essential. You get attacked, lost, breakdown in the car. That's apart from the obvious other uses. I don't think Public Call boxes can be depended upon. Yes, risks should be researched but I'd rather this that return to Victorian times with Gas Light (Dangerous stuff) and disease. A commune in the middle of nowhere may be the way forward for these guy's. [^] No Del (Sorry Admin not personal) you cannot cull them [}:)]

Was watching CNN last week and they had a report about a company in the U.S. that disguises mobile phone masts as trees, lampposts etc. They had several different styles of tree depending on the local flora. Looked quite realistic on the telly. The way ahead maybe?

There is already one disguised as a lampost in Waterford. Oddly they have placed it right next to an existing lampost. If you go round the M25 I believe there is also a mast disguised as a tree somewhere near Juntion 29 (I think - it's been a while since I was there).
