Why post such an irresponsible message which might get some of us business owners worried?

I think it's irony based on another thread, albeit in questionable taste.

[V] [:(] questionable taste? that is not a appropiate comment to make especially in light of recent events over the last few hours. Whilst you have been sleeping safely in your bed peoples homes in Ealing have been broken into by the thugs this and many other awful scenes have been in the news http://www.heart.co.uk/dunstable/news/local/riots-spread-hertfordshire/ Sony DADC Enfield, UK set alight and fires in Waltham Abbey not just in London but a National crisis now and to close for comfort in my opinion maybe some people from Hertford are employed here? The youth of Hertford are far too intelligent to join in this mindless violence, however it isn't the weekend yet maybe the Pubs and Clubs in Hertford will not be allowed to open on Police advice.[:(!] Mosquito I totally agree with your comment. Edit: The most disturbing video of the night from Woolwich New Road looting taking place, the Police Officers are outnumbered and helpless to stop the looting in the shopping centre, http://www.heart.co.uk/dunstable/news/local/riots-spread-hertfordshire/ fires right across London. Expect travel disruption in London later this morning which may be a unpleasant jorney for many residents living in Hertford and travelling into London to work.

I saw the plumes of smoke rising in the distance as I drove southbound on the A10 this am at 6.30am, also a friend on the same train said all of Brookfield shopping center was boarded up.

I think "questionable taste" is perfectly applicable, questioning the appropriateness of the joke. I don't think anyone needs their noses rubbed in the fact that they live in and sleep safely in what is a relatively quiet and rural town. And I'm sure we all know about the horrors commited by the thieving looters. I don't know anyone who is making light of this matter because they live in what is quite a safe place to live. The opportunistic thefts, vandalism and violence in Waltham Cross is simply that. Violent scumbags trying to exploit an opportunity to ransack businesses. The Sony DC is the same only with outrageous consequences. If it spreads to Hertford then I would be surprised but supportive of whatever action is required to bring iy under control.

I didn't find anything on Brookfield Farm being closed but Tesco's at Hatfield was : http://www.whtimes.co.uk/news/hatfield_tesco_closed_for_riot_fears_1_988432

If it spreads to Hertford then I would be surprised but supportive of whatever action is required to bring iy (sic) under control. Be careful for what you wish, you may get it. When we feel fear there is a tendency to overreact, to hit out at perceived threats with disproportionate force or exhort others to do so on our behalf. The OP can be taken as crass and in questionable taste but it strikes me as nervous humour. Even in comfy Hertford there is undercurrent of anxiety. These are times for a cool head and perspective.

Hmmm. I suspect that the allure of Estate Agents, Hairdressers & Nail Bars would not make Hertford the number one target in Hertfordshire, hence the irony , bad taste notwithstanding. And if it does kick off tonight I think the Cheshunt (or wherever)Massive will be more motivated by poor parenting, a disregard for authority & a something for nothing attitude (as a result of generations of free market thinking) than a single thread on a small community forum. Still nothing on The Folly incidentally....

I'm hardly wishing for trouble.........and simply supportive of whatever would be required to bring it under control if it does occur. A rather simple post, I think.

You can see it with the chavs around here, they are just not scared of the police and the police ARE scared of being reprimanded for being heavy handed... The police can deal with it (and will have to as our army is fighting to protect the scum that live here)they just need to use water cannons and rubber bullets and be protected by the law that they are meant to be enforcing.

There actually are indications on facebook and twitter, that Hertford may be a target tonight. I wonder how many of the good people on here will simply allow it??

The bloke who posted yesterday referring to a twitter message about Londis being trashed actually pasted the URL into his message. hardly complicated.

Here's an example of how reliable Twitter is as an information source: "When I hear news that shops in Hertford are boarding up, it makes me wonder what the ... is going on"

My point is that just because it's on Twitter doesn't mean it's true. Having just returned from the town centre myself I didn't see any shops that were closing early. Could you help by naming them? Maybe then we can find out if the closure is "riot related"

But the point is that there is scant reference to Hertford except a few comments I found on Twitter. If you know of more then post the URLS..........as I did. It's hardly complicated or time consuming and directs the reader straight to the source.

In the light of current events, I take the quoted text as evidence of an incitement to violence. I am not a lawyer but as the publisher, I question what legal responsibility Hertford.net now bears. The problem with the title and the course of this thread is that it has the potential to become self fulfilling. I have just been for a walk around the town. I overheard the staff of one shop discussing their fears having read internet rumours that I won't repeat. What perhaps, started out as a puerile quip has attracted some irresponsible responses even if from well intentioned sentiment. If I were an administrator I would delete this thread.

Oh.....will that be the Cafe Rouge I just phoned (535363) and who told me I can get a table up until half past ten (which is actually half an hour after their published closing time)? Strewth. Scare mongering nonsense that is not based upon facts. If something does happen in Hertford tonight then Cafe Rouge are certainly not preparing for it by closing early. Perhaps it would be helpful if you bothered to spend 1 minute checking facts before posting unsubstantiated nonsense that can only serve to cause concern.

Ewoowar, did you ask them if you can have a table outside??

Yesterday there were garbage rumours stating that the Londis in Hertford Heath was trashed. 1 phone call to them and it's proved wrong. Today there is a post stating that Cafe Rouge is closing early because of the troubles. 1 phone call and it is proved wrong. It is dead simple. Don't post scare mongering unsubstatiated garbage based upon rumour. Check your facts.

No. But apparently they have a cage for a troll........and though you can't book I'm sure they will be accomodating and I think there's even wi-fi.

I don't intend to get involved in this post but I can confirm that Cafe Rouge took all their tables and chairs inside at approx. 12.20pm this afternoon due to rumours that they had heard with regards to the looting, they decided to take precautions but still have their doors open for inside customers. I spoke to them myself along with other shop owners in Parliament Square. It seems to be only rumours as every shop is trading as normal.

I wouldn't worry, who the hell would use that slow train if they didnt have to. Also there would be no where to hide in Hertford or Ware, they would have to do the damage and then wait 20 minutes to get their train home :) Also what are they going to steal, a cornish pasty and and some ye old english sweets? If they enter Folly Island it will be like the battle of Stamford Bridge...

I would just like to say that it is highly likely that every youths Facebook and Twitter account has been full of rumours today about riots here there and everywhere, what I can comfirm is this http://www.channelmogo.org/music/festivals/heatwavefestival.htm most likely on Police advice. If you want to get upto date information on the looting and riots taken place follow this I hope Hertford is not mentioned tonight. http://www.channelmogo.org/music/festivals/heatwavefestival.htm message posted from my brand new Blackberry phone Im now a proud owner of a BBM device.

Thats a shame, one of my daughters friends was due to play....with regard to earlier posts...I sincerely hope it doesnt happen, and i dont consider myself a troll eoowar, I passed on information, that i had seen and heard through FB and twitter, I didnt realise that i had to present url evidence, had i have known that this was a requirement, i wouldnt have bothered posting at all.

People are nervous enough as it is. No one HAS to include URLs but if you are referencing something you read elsewhere you can't deny that including them helps and takes just seconds. It's not about 'presenting evidence' but this is an emotive subject that is partly driven by social media so it helps to base comments factually wherever possible and to avoid rumour.

I think there were some wannabe rioters last night. About a dozen of them congregated on our street corner and spilling over onto our drive. However the police were there before we even really noticed the group (we were in the kitchen at the back of the house). After they were 'dispersed' and the police left the area, there was a lot of shouting, running and bangs. Just as I was starting to get concerned and considering calling the police back, it all stopped. I think you can probably guess where I live but I would say it really is not as bad as it's reputation. This is the first time I have had concerns and the current situation is not exactly normal

Interesting item here from the BBC England riots: Dangers behind false rumours Excerpt: "Misinformation has been around for a really long time, but historically there have been gatekeepers to confirm things externally." It's the responsibility of the reader to filter what they read. In the same way, when you listen to people's conversations, you don't necessarily take every bit as gospel truth."

I got very angry with some facebook "friends" the other day when they posted some nonsense about there being a riot in hertford. They didnt seem to understand the consequence of these kinds of postings even if it was a question. It only takes a few local yobbos to see it and decide to go and take a look, as soon as there's enough in one place looking to see whats going on they may decide to start something anyway. On the flip side it was amazing what happened in Enfield so quickly once rumours of vigilantes were being spread around and quickly a number of groups had been created supporting them and many people heading down to join them, drawing in 100s of people in a matter of hours, and 1000s of facebook followers. I think in times like we saw at the weekend, we find it easier to believe something as after what we had already seen nothing seemed at all surprising !

As i said before Admin, Project leader, this theme is counter productive and nothing to do with hertford as there has been no reported events. So please dlelete it or lock it! i can't be the only one asking for this?
