We need to remember that as we sit here messing around with computers, arguing about empty shops and whether there are too many hairdressers in Hertford, there are men and women being killed and injured. I did not ask them to go for me, but they are there in our name and they have been for many conflicts since 'peace' in 1945. Their lives are so different to ours while on a tour that unless you have been there it is impossible to understand. I have not been, I do not understand, but I do support a visible sign from the people of Hertford to remember those that never see home and family again. I will give money to remember them, it is important.

If one could ask those who had fallen in action as to whether they would want a memorial or the money put towards the recuperation of those who had survived with dreadful injuries I wonder what the answer would be ? I have to agree with Steve on this one. Why do we need another war memorial? I havn't read the inscriptions on the one in Parliament square recently. Does it only refer to those who died during WW1 ?

I had always thought that the war memorial commemorated all those who have fallen defending our freedom.

Which leads one to ask.....is it in memory of those who have fallen or for the benefit of those in County Hall that some of us would like to see fallen ?

Initially I assumed this was some kind of duplication but the plan seems to be to remember the casualties of Hertfordshire rather than Hertford specific so its role is slightly different. Could be a total non-story.

I admire and respect any war memorial that commemorates our war dead from whichever war but as far as I am aware most towns and small villages, have memorials which have a service of rememberance on them every November and as our huge memorial in Hertford and I know there are several over the whole of Herts in the major towns etc, this possible building of one at County Hall seems to be a waste of £65K. We have memorials all over the UK in most towns, cities and villages.. this is not appropriate even though the sentiment, in my opinion to commemorate our dead, is.

I would like to think that any service man or woman who has been killed in action since WW2 would already have been honoured by their home town/town of birth and added to the War Memorial as a matter of course. A seperate memorial is expensive, and as has been said would not be seen by very many people.

I cannot speak from experience. Let's face it none of us can. However, I would imagine that those who have died in various conflicts, including the most recent of, say, Iraq and Afghanistan, might say, if they had a voice, donate the money to Help for Heroes. A proper memorial to those who have given all.

Fair point Buzz but a memorial could be viewed as a help for grieving relatives as much as anything else

This morning I took a good look at the memorial in Parliament Square. It records the names of Hertford men who died in both the first and second World Wars. There is plenty of space there to add others if needs be . I believe that there is a stonemason in Tamworth Rd who would provide an adequate result for a VERY small percentage of £65,000

From reading the mercury website this sounds like a bit of an Ego trip for a couple of County Councillors from Harpenden. At least they don't plan on wasting tax-payers money on this folly.
