Only shame is, i parked in West St one afternoon and got a rude message lefton my car!! There are no lines on road, no reason why i'm not allowed to park there. Bit annoyed about that, considering my sister-in-law lives down that road and said i can park there - not as if i dont pay my road tax[:(]

Visited the Black Horse on Sunday to suss out the new folks in town. Can't believe how busy it was compared with 12 months ago. New tenants seemed to have worked wonders. Great service, friendly staff and well kept ales. I also understand the pub has been selected to appear in the CAMRA Good Beer Guide for 2006. Hertford really does have three real ale pubs now. Beer garden is immense, well kept and extemely inviting on a warm day. What a sun trap! And what a novel way to get to the garden. You have to go up stairs...... Give it a try. I will certainly be back.[8D][8D]

Yes dogs are welcome at all times. We do have a massive garden but would ask that dogs are kept on a lead. A water bowl is available but some bring their own, and I am serious here. Yes there is a TV in the smaller area where the dart board is, totally away from the bar. It cannot be heard in the main bar either if it is on. For the bigger events i.e. cup finals, rugby etc., we do have an LCD screen which we put on the main bar, but it is not intrusive. Why don't you come and give us the "once over". Tony and I make everyone welcome. By the way Victor; Doug, Ronnie and Lewy don't know who you are. Identify yourself sir! By the way, does anyone want a morning cleaning job? (An hour and a half each day) Sorry if I am not allowed to advertise.

No Sloop, the Mercury are up to date. Dobbin sent in the report via email, together with a photo, only AFTER receiving a copy of the GBG to make sure the inclusion was actually there. He was then interviewed on the 'phone on Wednesday last week and lo and behold the article was printed on Friday. Quite speedy for the Mercury. By the way did you enjoy your Sunday lunch? We have just been awarded the Cask Marque Certification. The real ales and the glasses passed (with full marks)the rigorous sampling and temperature measuring on the two occasions that their inspector made random visits. Watch out for the plaque appearing soon outside the door. This means that 'The perfect pint is served here'. Dobbin is over the moon.

Well, we did sneek into the BH last night, around 9.00, although left around 11.00, to move on elsewhere. We would have stayed - we loved the atmosphere, the people were friendly and the beer was excellent - but we had plans elsewhere. I would have introduced myself but you seemed a bit busy! We'll be back (I hope) and I can say hello then. I might even try and get along to the stroll next weekend - or at least chuck some money in the pot when you return. A great place to spend an evening. Happy New Year.

Just to say that I had a very enjoyable meal with Mrs Sloop and the junior Sloops this lunchtime. Apart from the usual excellent standards of food and service and a more than half decent Ruddles it was pleasant to find so many families enjoying a Sunday lunch together. There was a thread on another board about meals out with children. Considering that there was no misbehaved people all lunchtime perhaps we are moving to the Continental ideal or .... there is the right atmosphere being generated at the Black Horse. Personaly i think the latter.[^]

Appears that the Black Horse is highly rated by some of the people on here and ashamed to say as my local I've never been. So how does the Black Horse rate for food compared to other pubs/bars in the area - unfortunately I always find pub food overated and tend to avoid but would love to find a place that offered decent food, especially on a Sunday.

Have visited twice in the past month or so. The garden is great. Its hard to imagine you are in a town pub, virtually no traffic noise and with no car park attached it really feels like a rural haven and the beer's all right as well.

Had my first visit yesterday after the Hertford Town debacle (they lost 3-5!) The Ruddles Orchard you had on was probably the finest pints in town - you definitely know how to look after your beers and serve them Rooster. Will be back soon - simply a lovely boozer.

Actually Rooster, the Black Horse was the first pub I entered in Hertford. I lived in East London at the time and was in the area for, errm, a corporate do. OK it was golf. Anyhooo, the post hacking event was a Black Horse barbecue (some may recognise it as BBQ). This was about 8 years ago and the Black Horse was run by a charming fella with pebble glasses. To my recollection, the day went well, even to the point where my only persisting memory of the day was the sight of the landlord/barbecue man sitting next to the BBQ and presenting his gonads through his jogging shorts. There was a lot of food left at the barbecue. Despite the landlords unorthodox welcome, I still came to live here.

Yes - we remembered to turn up! Yet another great quiz at the Black Horse - well done Tony. We're getting really used to this winning lark! As for the Banks's - it all looks like the after-effects of dialysis to me, and probably tastes like it too! [;)]

I think CAMRA does a 'mild month' every year (May may be the month) and Hertford pubs certainly do their bit, including the Black Horse I'm glad to say. GK does do a lovely mild (though I think someone actually contract brews it for them). you may tell that Mild is a favourite style of beer for me and although frequently available in the North, there is a tendency for keg to be taking over from cask up there simply because it doesn't have the throughput of other bitters sold alongside. So while it's not always available down in Hertford I'm glad to say that when it is it's always cask! Well done for being a top Real Ale outlet BH. I've never been disappointed by a real ale pint from your establishment, wherever it's been brewed. It's just as much about cellarmanship as about the quality of the raw material!!

Popped in last night for the first time in years to say hello to Rooster and Dobbin. Great hosts, lovely drop of ale, typically friendly Hertford locals. Perfect stop for a pint if you're in the vicinity. Seems like a huge number of the forum already know this though.

It's very clear from the number of pages about The Black Horse that it's a highly recommended establishment. If you post a personal thanks to the landlord for a particular night or event, you may find that it gets removed as it's often not considered to be "general" recommendation. Sorry to all those who feel that their post has been unfairly removed. [:)]
