No more 'fast' trains to London

Commuters into London from Hertford East may wish to check out the News section on the One Website under the heading 'Your views wanted on West Anglia timetable!'. It is proposed that there will be no more 'fast' trains from Hertford to London. The 0708 from Hertford will become the 0707 and will not arrive into Liv St until 0757, with additional stops at Cheshunt, Waltham Cross, Enfield Lock, Brimsdown, Ponders End and Hackney Downs. The 0738 becomes the 0737 with the same stops and arriving at 0827. The 1724 back to Hertford will leave at 1716 but still arrive at 1807 again with a lot more stops. The 1637 will leave at 1646 and there will no longer be the option to catch up the service at Broxbourne by taking a Cambridge train. There will not be a Hertford to Stratford service but a Broxbourne to Stratford service is planned. There is no mention of any extra carriages on these services

Couldnt believe this until i went to the ONE website. So, after all the consultations when people said they wanted more of the same if possible (ie direct/fastish trains) they have done the complete opposite and increased the time and the stops on the direct trains (which are already full on the way into London by the time it reaches Rye House.) As of Dec it then seems i shall be forced to drive to Broxbourne at the detriment of the enviroment etc etc. I shall also, (as we are looking to move at the moment) now widen my horizons as this now makes Hertford less of an attractive proposition as commuting is almost unviable. Im sure they have a view to cutting the service more and more in years to come.

Frenchie, you go to canary wharf right? Maybe worth considering the 5.43 from HN to Old street then northern line to london bridge and jubilee line to CW. That's how i'll be doing it when we move office.

I currently live very close to HE so HN is a 10+ min walk for me which makes it of little appeal. The only upside for me is the first trains are now direct to Ldn, without having to change at Brox. The stratford trains involve a 15min wait at Brox...so useless. Unfortunately the car is the future it seems. Tks for the suggestion thou Carlos.

This could affect more people than just the commuters who use Hertford East in the mornings. If the H.East service deteriorates, this could mean more people using H.North. And on the Ware Online forum where they clearly have more to lose because they don’t have an alternative line into London, someone has pointed out that if the Hertford East service is run down making the commute more difficult, this could eventually affect the desirability of our town as a place to live and commute from. Which is exactly what Frenchie's saying above. The consultation info on the One website is at: http://www.onerailway.com/latestinformation/news/newsdisplay.asp?id=702

That's a very interesting point Rachel. Royston became a very popular place to live once the line from Kings X was electrified and they ran fast trains. For the same reasons people now live out in the wilds of East Anglia because there is a fast line. If Ware was to lose their station, or be severely downgraded the attraction for the average commuter would be far less. There is a dangerous conspiracy theory side to my character (often remarked upon by local politicians) that such a move would make Harlow and environs (not to mention its train station with access to Stanstead) more attractive and justify the razing of vast areas of green fields for new Wimpey estates.

It never ceases to amaze me that rail companies have the money to re-paint all the trains and stations to their corporate colours but not to run a service the users want. If we want a proper rail service the franchises would have to be given out for 20 odd years. No politician will ever do that. it is a short sightedness that is driving the country into the ground.

Then House Prices will tumble and people will not be able to afford to move. [:(!]

Hopefully, then maybe the youngsters in this town will be able to afford to buy a house!

Yes. And perhaps no more of these developers signing up to include 'affordable housing' in their developments and then building 1 bed flats that cost £160,000...............'affordable housing'!?!?!?!

The problem is that there are people who will pay the £160,000 for those flats and they will keep the price that high [:(!]

I know........but it makes a mockery of the 'affordable housing' tag. I have a friend who has taught in Hertfordshire for 10 years but cannot afford to live here in a place of his own.
