I have been advised that there were a couple of men in suits picking up dog dirt around lower Bengeo last week? If this is true, the Council are at last doing something for our community tax! However I do appreciate that the real problem lies with the owners of the dogs. I have witnessed on several occasions people watching their pets fowl the verges/parkland without bothering to collect the offending mess afterwards. What amazes me, is that its normally the older generation that are guilty of this! Surely they should know better.

yes, its shocking isnt it. i must say id rather the council did other things than pick up dog ****.

I'd rather they would do a lot of things, you obviously do not have children that play out on the playing fields off of Beane Road or Dog S**t alley as it should be known!

Well now we know where the 17% Council Tax rise is going.
Reply ID 5571
Where did the 17% figure come from?

This is about dog dirt not council tax!

Apologies Rachel, but I do not trawl through the back topics of this website. My point was that, I was told that there were 2 men in suits collecting dog dirt in lower Bengeo last week, now I am not sure if this was also said in the previous string and to be fair, I do not really care, as my point is that I was told this at the weekend, which further fuelled my on going anger at seeing people watch their dogs merrily turd away for fun and do nothing about it. Personally I think its a far more important issue than some of the others discussed on this forum. So if anyone can tell me if the council have employed "Turd Collectors" on a regular basis I would be very grateful. Thank you.

Steve, know it's completely off topic but to answer your question, in the breakdown of my new council tax bill the Hertford Town Council bit has gone up 17%...unless i misread the thing (which I don't think i did). Back on topic...agree with Vic 100%.

hi vic i also agree i have two dogs and a pocket full of bags when ever i go out. you can get pooper scoop bags free from the council/dog warden i think. but the sented nappy sacks work well!! there are no excuses and it infuriates me when i walk down the road and some one has allowed there dog to do there business earilier on and as i have my dogs with me i get automatically blamed. this wouldnt happen if people had a bit more consideration!!! i do clean it up and have offered bag to people with dogs as they have gone to walk away with out first collecting the mess the dog leaves behind.[V]

I have to agree, sadly I no longer have my Dog's but Nappy Sacks are the way forward - the council don't support the rewolval of waste from the bins - so is that why people don't bother. I know you do and other responsible dog owners do! If the owner's won't who will?Do they know the damage that dog faces can cause? If they have kid's or know anyone that has, they need to think about it

Totally agree with you regarding the fact that Dog owners should pick up the mess themselves. But if the council have people employed to clean up the countryside, why shouldn't they pick up the mess as well. This topic is beginning to sound like the chewing gum scenario. "Why should they council spend money on machines and people to work the machines???" Do you see what im getting at? Basically anyone that litters the country is scum, weather it be rubbish, chewing gum or dog dirt. In Singapore I belive that its illeagal to even chew gum in public, let alone drop it on the pavement. I would imagine that letting your dog fowl the pavement there would result in some sort or custodial sentance.

quote:maybe so, but i doubt it, as singapore is rife with aids and stds i think , not sure, that the morals of people are different in singapore than they are in hertford, i dont really get your point there victor. I think a custodial sentence is not a bad idea, ok , the dog has to do his biz somewhere, its the keeper for not picking it, and besides who would get the sentence, the dog or the owner. This is not particular to Hertford in general, so before the topic gets locked or i get kicked out, i have closed my part of the discussion, thank you.

A) I never suggested that people should get a custodial sentence for not collecting their dogs mess, I mearly implied that it would not surprise me if that were the case in Singapore, BTW you cannot get aids from chewing gum on pavements! B)my point about Singapore was that the authorities there are obviously more concerned about keeping there streets clean than our authorities are. C) This topic is particular to Hertford, as stated in my original post, I asked If anyone else had witnessed the "turd collectors" last week.

fantastic argument over what do you think of the sticker idea??

But would the stickers then become a problem like dog dirt and chewing gum?

Should we put the stickers on the owners, the dogs or the turds?

stickers on the dog owners! would shame them into cleaning up after there dogs perhaps a dic and dom approach would be the way to do it as i could see some owners getting agressive!![8D]

The best way to shame dog owners is do what I did. I spotted in Bengeo a lady and her black labrador dog in the distance. She chatted to some of her neighbours at the time I caught up to find her dog doing said poo onto the pavement I was walking on. I was polite said, excuse me, but do you know your dog has just defecated on the pavement, would you mind scooping it up! She went bright red, mumbled about no plastic bag, to which point I spoke to her neighbour who was talking to her and asked the neighbour if she had a plastic bag for the lady to clean up the toxic mess! They were so stunned, but it worked. I didn't shout, wasn't rude, but was fair. I was quite surprised how to the point I was, but I noticed the neighbour was a mum, and these are usually the groups of people who get very vociferous about the toxicity of dogs faeces and how children and adults can go blind! Sadly we are not usually around when this happens, but I would always approach the owner if you do see their dog defeacating and if they do nothing about it, make a lot of noise and embarrass them

I agree. A polite approach is better. While a neighbour of mine was away on holiday they had some people visit their house and they brought a dog. I saw a lad take the dog for a walk on the grass next to our houses and when I went out 10 minutes later there was a a fresh steaming pile of mess on the lawn. I find it hard to understand how people can think it is acceptable to take their animal to someone elses property, let it mess and leave it for someone else to clean up. So.....I knocked on the door and spoke to the boys father. The mess was promptly removed.

quote:Hmmmm........I understand what you mean but I couldn't hurl dog excrement at my neighbours windows, especially if it wasn't their dog. I suppose I could have scooped it up and wedged it under their car door handle so it wouldn't be noticed until it was, errr, felt.

ooohh the memories you have just brought back to me justin, my mother is a very keen gardener and our neighbour had a cat that came to do its business every day in our garden my mother would complain, the neighbour would say cats are allowed because cats are cats. one day my mother had had enough of her plants being dug up also killed through cat urine so she sent my dad for high trellis. she collect cat poo and then she flung the whole lot over the fence and put up the trellis!!! the neighbour was livid but it worked![:D][:D][:D] we always have cleaned up after our dogs and expect other people to have the same standards. this morning i took my dogs to the castle grounds where i was discusted at the amount of dog poo there was,[xx(] there is no excuse and on the lawns where people take there little ones,[V] come on dog owners dont make me ashamed to take my dogs out incase im classed as one of you!!!

if cats can be trained inside to use cat litter trays perhaps owners could teach them to use one out side![:D]and someone could design a type of nappy for dog owners who allow there dog to make a mess and dont clean it up so only the owner has to deal with the mess!!![:D]

There are obvious solutions for cleaning up dog mess that are within the control of the owner. If you come up with a logical and sensible solution for cat mess I'm sure it would be welcomed. I was going to post the very same thing but thought it a bit silly - maybe Dawn's idea would work - so maybe not so silly! They seem to prey on shilngled gardens, much to my distress. Someone else owns it now so not my problem. When we get the dreaded Cat's I'll bear it in mind [:)]

I have four cats. They are locked in overnight and use a litter tray. They also prefer to use the tray even in the day time when the cat flap is open.

quote:I'm not sure about "prefer" - I just think cats are incredibly lazy and will do whatever requires the least walking - "shall I walk down the garden and dig a hole, no I think I'll just go here in this box". I don't have a litter tray indoors, but often have one outside the back door in summer to stop mine going in the garden.

If you see anybody with a fouling dog and not poo picking afterwards, here's a tip. Pick up the poo and discreetly follow dog owner to their home. Wrap the poo into a neat little paper parcel - with a bit of string for good effect. Set fire to it on their doorstep, ring the doorbell and run to a safe observation point. when they open the door their first reaction is to stamp on said parcel very hard... won't cure the problem but boy is it funny!!!

I believe in the olden days dog poo was used in tanning, and people were paid a small sum for a bucket of dog poo. There used to be tanners in Hertford, presumably, judging by some giveaway street names. May we should entice the tanners back, and thelocal kids could earn a bob or two. It's what you call a win-win situation.

The gentle pastime of poo-picking and selling would become far too aggressive. I forsee people picking up fat dogs and squeezing them before hey are ready...

I wouldn't fight anyone for it, but it's a thought. I wouldn't squeeze a fat dog either - It might bite me! And I am scared of horses so won't be there. Just thought it could be another re-cycling method [:)]

Most animals are instictively scared off by lion and tiger poo. My sister owns a fruit farm conveniently close to a safari park, they get tiger poo free of charge to keep the deer off their land, and it works, even though most deer have never experienced tigers. Maybe we should put piles of lion and tiger poo in the worst fouled areas... but then i suppose people would complain about that! (mind you, it's probably bigger and therefore more easily avoided...)[}:)]
Reply ID 6043
maybe the new street wardens could patrol with lions on leads.... then no one would litter! no dogs would foul the streets and no-one would dare park illegally they could even patrol on fri/sat night and stop all drunken behavior and send kids home. i know i wouldnt argue with a street warden with a lion on a lead!!![:D]
