Buried treasure in Hertford?

I found an intriguing local news story about clues to buried treasure in this week's Hertfordshire Mercury (25 March 2005) -- seriously! [;)] The headline is Landowner blocks hunt for 'Templar treasures'... http://www.herts-essex-news.co.uk/news/Hertfordshire_mercury/2005/03/24/landowner%20blocks%20hunt%20for%20templar%20treasures.lpf The article quotes a letter written to the Templars by a big land-owner which refers to certain "items" which have apparently been "secreted beneath the surrounding fields, outbuildings, moat and house have been there for 700 years". The letter continues: "During all this time, these items have been lying dormant and safe within this area and, in my view, there can be no justification to make a hasty reaction to the recent article in the local press." The newspaper refuses to disclose the exact location. My own humble sources suspect that this refers to a farm in a town or village near Hertford. Does anybody have any ideas? Consider the clues in the letter, which describe a "farm" with "surrounding fields, outbuildings, moat and house". Surely that must narrow it down? How may farms can there be around here with a moat? Does anybody know where this secret location could be, or who this land-owner is?

The article in the Mercury states............."In a letter passed to the Mercury". It also says, "The letter passed to the Mercury was addressed to the Poor Fellow Soldiers of Jesus Christ and the Temple of Solomon, at a PO box in Hertford." It then goes on to quote from Tim Acheson. Hmmmmmm. Now, it is clear that the letter they are referring to was written in response to a request made to them, presumably to investigate or excavate on their land. So it seems like a simple path........... 1) Person X writes to landowner. Person does not even use their own address but a PO box. Therefore why on Earth would anybody permit their request. 2) Landowner responds. 3) Person X, or an accomplice, takes letter to Mercury. Who else could it have been! If person X was serious about such important artefacts why would they drag it through the papers? Some people crave publicity too much!

I couldn't have put it better Ewoowar! Good to see that the so-called 'Modern Day Templar' has come up with another way to get the story going again though, if only for the entertainment value[:)]

I think that this Holy Grail in Hertford stuff is the product of somebody's overactive imagination I watched a programme with Tony Robinson called "The Real Da Vinci Code" and he looked at the holy grail legends. I was hoping that he was going to mention Hertford, but no! Also he concluded that there was no link between the Knights Templar and the Holy grail. Also the Holy Grail is a medieval myth and doesn't exist. It seemed far more plausible than the stories in the Mercury.

Jez this is true, the Tony Robinson documentary did seem very plausible BUT if you were to continue your reading you would find many other books etc just as plausible. [;)] I have no idea if Hertford is in any way related to anything like this but you also have to keep an open mind. If you like to investigate these things then there are things in Hertford that do make you ask the question - why are they there and what do they represent....?[?] I think TVA has every right to put his opinions on just as much as the next person - even if he is the letter writer etc - and even if it's fiction a least we all have something different to think about ! [:D][^]

I have better things to do than research the Holy Grail. I enjoyed reading the Da Vinci Code as a work of fiction but I have no desire to get my spade out and go looking for treasure under farmers fields, thanks [;)]

Let me guess - you dug up an old metal goblet and sold it to TVA claiming it was the Holy Grail [:p]

The documentary in question, which was presented by that chap who played the the side-kick in Blackadder, was interesting. But it set out to investigate the fictional story, as found in Dan Brown's fictional novel, rather than the historical facts. Hertford was not in the documentary because it is not in Dan Brown's novel - Q.E.D.

The case has been solved by Alec from Ware Online: http://www.wareonline.co.uk/haveyoursay/topic.php?id=951 The unspecified location is in fact Temple Farm in Bengeo which is located between Ware and Hertford: http://www.wareonline.co.uk/haveyoursay/topic.php?id=951 Temple Farm matches the clues perfectly -- it has a moat (and moat-house) and was built and by the Templars who occupied the land until the day the day they dissapeared! So who is the land owner?

I don't know - possibly the farmer, although perhaps in next weeks mercury there will be a story that Tim Acheson has mounted a legal challenge to become the landowner [;)]

Nice one, Admin. I tolerate and indeed admire TVA's nonsense, abley assisted by Sloop's mate Raymond 'Tunnel' Brown of the Mercury, because there's no such thing as bad publicity and anything that promotes national and even international interest in our county town can't be bad. Tunnels, templars, treasure, freemasons, whatever. [^] All good stuff. But it's clear that this forum and Ware Online are being manipulated. Most of us like Bengeobabe take this in a light-hearted spirit of fun [:)] but there only needs to be one nutter out there who starts digging on private land to get themselves and possibly this forum into trouble. The Mercury was acute enough not to publish info directly pointing to the identity of the landowner who was sent the daft Templars letter; the landowner quite understandably did not want to be identified. I never thought I'd find myself defending a wealthy landowner but if the owner of Temple farm (or wherever it is that TVA's grail treasure thingy is allegedly buried) found him/herself dealing with trespassers because of information posted on a community website, well, I reckon he/she would be justified in taking the Tony Martin approach! [}:)][xx(]

Further to the above notice Admin I wish to make it clear that I have no personal agenda to pursue on this forum. Like every user I do bring along my own personal interests and opinions. While the topics that I raise or discuss here may well be considered unusual or undesirable, they are always locally relevant. If I believe that a story or angle is interesting I would like to discuss it here freely even if not everybody shares my interest. Similarly, if I take sides in a debate on any local issue, I would hope to express my side of the argument freely even if not everybody shares my beliefs. By the same token, if another user has a special interest in a different local issue -- such as crime, litter, vandalism, or an aspect of local history -- I would not expect them to encounter any restrictions from the management. However, if the good people who manage this website find my interests and opinions unacceptable, or ask me to stop using the forum, I must abide by their decision. If any of my posts are deemed unacceptable by the management I would like to understand why and moderate my posting accordingly.

Picking up from where we left off, does anybody know who that land-owner might be? Care to hazard guess? [8)]

On the grounds that I wouldn't do anything that I would not like done to me I think that divulging the identity of the landowner and therefore the location of supposedly buried treasure is of the utmost irresponsibility. I would certainly not want the world and his dog (almost literally) round my back garden digging it up. Even though my own back garden could do with a seasonal make over. BTW the chap on Ware Online is way off beam as it is nowhere near where Raymond 'Tunnel' Brown believes his pot of gold is buried. I rang my good friend Long John Silver and he said Jim Hawkins might know but Blind Pugh got there first. So less of a red cross, more of a black spot.

The area has become hip in Templar lore, enjoy it while it last`s and if more comes from it then all the better. Information not shared is information lost. <G>
