Joined-up Library?
Can anyone explain, especially in these days of impending Public Sector cut-backs, why the Library is replacing its check-out desks?
Even more so, when they're moving to new premises in the next twelve months or so.
Seems a little bit profligate to me...

we wondered that. but perhaps they'll be moved. they're moving to self service - something every other library in hertfordshire (and essex) has already done. maybe they felt they couldnt wait any longer.

The original plan was to have moved into the new building this year but that was put back. Every library apart from Welwyn Garden City has now got the new system. The self service system was being rolled out long before the recent cutback announcements. The timing is not brilliant but unavoidable!!

Unless I'm mistaken the Dolphin Yard development is running about a year behind it's original schedule.

I have been told by one of the library staff that the present system is so old that it is virtually impossible to get repairs done and if it fails totally they will have a real problem. Presumably this is the reason, so that they can be sure of maintaining their service to us. Have tried the new system elsewhere and don't like it but I suppose we have to put it down to 'progress'

I see that work appears to have started on fitting out the new library with completion due 18 Nov 2011 according to the signs on the hoardings at Dolphin Yard next to EWM

I look forward to it.
I wonder what will be made of the old library premises.

It will be a coffee shop, a hairdresser or Nando's.

Long term it will save as it saves paying for those pesky staff members!

Sorry i see that the messages about money were over a year ago.
I think the old buiding would make a nice place for the hertford museum if they hadn't just spent lots of money renovating it.

Its a lovely building, but has been left to fall into disrepair a bit recently. I would love to see its use maintained. Perhaps local Solicitors need more space and could move into it, or maybe an art gallery/artisan's premises, ie get lots of little companies/individuals in who make jewellery, glasswear anything... Make pottery pots! I am just thinking out load, but something where the people of Hertford and tourists could make and buy things made locally and keep our town centre alive... [:)]
