What are people's thoughts on the opening of a top of the range men's clothes shop (23+) in Hertford for those in the local area(s) with money to burn who don't fancy treking into London or Bluewater etc?

You may want to check out Yates.............they recently finished their sale and had some items at 80% off.......makes you wonder why. I like the Browns/Browns For Less offering. Designer shop with the cheaper version on the opposite side of the road.

What do you mean by "top of the range" ?. My understanding is real top of the range/designer is not allowed to be sold in one-off local shops due to maintaining 'image' etc.

To be honest I was only thinking of 'top of the range' in a high street sense (Armani etc) rather than anything you'd have to go to Sloan Square for. I don't know Hertford at all well so there may already be something like this that exists. It just seems to me that there are a number of well know drinking establishments in the area (Elberts, Baroosh, Sky etc) and the people that frequent them have to get their clothes somewhere....

Well many of the people who frequent these establishments are out-of-towners from places where it's easy to find a River Island or somesuch outlet. I'm amazed that the likes of Yates (Fore Street) or Roberto Gerrards (Railway Street) manage to survive, although Mr.H in Maidenhead Street didn't last. Personally, if I was looking to start a retail business in the town, this would certainly not be my chosen stock-in-trade.

Steve, Im with you. Never walked into one and they always look dead. New trendy girls shop opened on Sat next to Blockbuster for you girls with cash to burn.....

The only shop I really wish Hertford had is a decent Dvd rental shop as the blockbuster we have is a rediculous size and doesn't stock anything! However to open as an independant in this business would clearly be a major risk! ~~~ Off Topic ~~~

i would say if you do a business plan, look at all the out goings-- double it! then work out if you can afford to take nothing out of the business for to years, no pay, then maybe if what you predict is enough and your then established for your quaility you might have a chance. but as said on another thread it can take any where from six months to two years just to sort a lease out.[?][:(][8] but saying all of that if its your dream[|)][8D][^] then do it you only get one life and you dont want to look back on it saying if only!! There are lots of people the live and have lived in Hertford for many years frequenting places like Baroosh etc. I know I am one of them! As far as I am aware shops like Yates have survived by getting themselves a good name amoungst a set of people that return on a regular basis. Get that and you will have it made! If you are looking for a niche in the market in Hertford, then maybe look at the middle man between Armani and Burtons!!! You may have noticed the lack of a Next/Gap/River Island in Hertford, now I am not suggesting that you should open up one of these, however there must be an opening in the market place for this price range.
