I have just heard reports of a stabbing in the Sele Farm area and a huge Police presence and they are warning the public to stay in doors, can any 1 provide further news on this?

Someone was stabbed at the corner of Calton Ave and Windsor Drive. Lots of police milling around but not advising people to stay in doors. Apparently it was a local that was stabbed.

Ok that's how you feel but I haven't walked around either area at 2 a.m. and Im not planning to experiment either. I have heard Horns Mill Estate is pretty bad especially Cecil Road. They are reports of a lot of people using and dealing drugs on that estate and the Police dont seem to do anything about it so I have heard. I wonder if the Police reading this can/will comment on this to there defence of these claims, maybe I should have started a new thread going off topic here slightly but I bet the stabbing is drug related?

Latest news: the knife that may have been used in the stabbing has been found in some 1s garden in Windsor Drive.

I think random attacks in this area are very rare(as in Hertford area)I think that this incident will probably be between people who have had a disagreement and know each other(I am sure we will find out). I wouldn't feel safe walking through the middle of a housing estate in Hackney at 2am because I don't know the area.

quote:From what I've seen from my experiences from visiting that area there is a form of under class there, which live next to the normal hard working family types, who own their own house, have a family, and get up in the morning to earn a crust. Dalston is not a million miles from me as it happens. Mostly young professionals now, and is a fairly expensive place to live (apart from the estates which breed the "underclass". I'm looking out on my balcon now where I can see the BT tower, and the Gherkin. Tonight I had dinner out there and watched the sun set over Hampstead Heath. However, parts of Hackney are bad, and parts of Dalston are bad. Personally, I don't mind there being an estate 5 mins from where I live - the underclass generally stay there stabbing and robbing each other and partying until 0400hrs as they don't have jobs to go to and I get to get on with my life without being seriously affected by their lifestyle choices - people in the main get to live in an environment that they deserve. Why do you think a flat in Sele Farm can be had for about 110-120k when you would need to spend a fair bit more than that to live else where in the town for a similar size property.

I have a idea could the Council or Riversmead move the so called underclass in 1 place like Cecil Road for example? Answer no because NO 1 else as you say like normal hard working types would want to live there. Simples mix people with different backgrounds together to reduce problems and when it gets too bad move those troublesome people on to another area sad but true fact.

We had window locks, steel bars embedded into the plasterwork, which were then locked AND had separate padlocks. If we had a fire we were toast. And they still broke in, taking the steel bars out of the plaster and fabric of the building. And that does not include all the random shouting and intimidation. No contest. Sele Farm is cheaper because of perceptions. Houses do not appear to be on the market for long and prices are rising (I know because we have been looking for 6 months at Hertford).

Welcome to Hertford Kateg28. But don't try too hard to change perceptions of Sele, as the wrong type of Uber-class (didn't they used to be called Yuppies?) might realise the community, property, location and low-pupil/teacher ratio benefits, wish to join the fun and raise prices for everyone as a result. I was born and brought up in Hackney and, as Donostia says, wouldn't feel comfortable walking through parts of Hackney during the day. This sort of incident will take up a couple of pages in the Mercury this week. It would barely get a mention in the Hackney Gazette. Put some perspective on it. Also, I'd be more than willing to bet that the perpetrator isn't from Sele Farm or even Hertford.

Kate, Sele Farm has changed since I grew up there but I still have family on the estate and know a few others who live there. Like any large estate of its type it does have some problems but I'm sure with your experience you'll know how to handle those issues when they arise. On the flip side there are a lot of positives about the majority of people who live there being quite normal, the local shops are good, you have easy access to the trains to London plus the countryside on your doorstep. I believe this incident is a 'one off' and the area is not a serious health hazard; yes the probability is that an incident of this type is more likely to happen in Sele Farm than Warren Park but statistics and the perceptions formed from them often hide the reality of the situation.

Thank you all. I actually have lived in one of the outer villages of Ware for the last 13 years so my adventure in Hackney was before then. I am moving as my son now goes to Richard Hale and the last year have been difficult with transport so decided to upsticks and move to Hertford. Sele Farm suited us because of price range (more for your money than Bengeo) and physical location for his school and our jobs (me London, him Stevenage). I was aware of the 'image' of Sele Farm but have found out it is rubbish. The area is peaceful with decent families bringing up their children and a real sense of community that I hope to contribute to. I was concerned as my son goes to Richard Hale and the main school there is The Sele School but apparently all the kids just get on and whilst there is some (healthy) rivalry, there is no trouble between the different pupils (and his best at school lives in the same road we are moving to!). We are all really looking forward to it. I would never have brought him up in Hackney. Never. By the way, how would a concierge (which we didn't have!) have dealt with the armed robbery and the stabbings at the pub a few doors down?

I have been invited to put some perspective on it, so I'll attempt to do so. I have had no problems living in Hackney (although I live closer to Old Street than I do Stamford Hill). I lived in Hertford for over 20 years until fairly recently. I've also lived in Berkshire, Sussex, Essex and Surrey over the past few years. The fact that people have said "I used to live in Hackney etc" in an attempt to put across an informed viewpoint is very amusing. You lived in Hackney in the 80's? That must mean you are quite informed then. A lot of people live in the smoke, and then move out to the suburbs (like Hertford) to start a family etc. If you live in an urban environment such as Hackney, inner city violence is in part, to be expected. If you move out to Hertford to avoid this sort of thing, and to get a bigger house, it is surprising when incidences such as yesterday happen. However I was not surprised to hear that it happened in Sele Farm. Look in the Mercury, the Magistrates court is frequently busy from the Residents of The Ridgeway, Thieves lane et al. If I were to move back to Hertford, it probably would be to start a family - I share the opinions that I wouldn't want to bring my kids up in London (although if I had enough money to buy in the area in Hackney I would like it would cost me about a million quid for a 4 bed townhouse. So what do you do? You take a hit and move out to somewhere like Hertford. Where upon return from work you are met with a blood stained knife in your garden and a police barrier to your road. Nice. Unforunately if you bung a lot of people that don't give a monkeys toss about others, and their surroundings, into a large estate you get the "broken windows" problem - an example of which we saw last night. My point still stands - I would feel safer walking back from a night out in Shoreditch to my flat than I would walking across the Sele Farm Estate at 2am. I have first hand and recent experience of both environments, at that time. It seems that no other poster here does. Of course Hackney was a terrible place back in the 80's. It wasnt't that long ago since Notthing Hill and the area around it was bad - but look at it now.

Exiled_In_Reading ...... Since I moved back to Hertford, In my immediate area there has been arson, murder, vandalism and graffiti. Like to take a guess as to which part of Hertford I live in? From my experience Sele only has a less than good reputation with people who don't know the area and are far too quick to make scathing comments.

Exiled in Reading: I assume you are levelling your criticism of 'recent experience' at me. Just to clarify, and for complete accuracy: I actually lived in Shoreditch too, Hackney Road to be precise. The dates were 20th June 1988 to 10th May 1997. All those incidents mentioned were over 13 years ago but they happened to me, my immediate neighbour or in my vicinity. They were not something I read about. Yes the information may be over 13 years ago but my opinion is that Sele Farm is suffering from historical misconceptions. I feel my post was relevant, I have had experience of the area you live in and feel it was right to defend the area I am moving to.

And your experience of Sele Farm is a few visits? I've not lived in Hackney but spent many nights in the Old St area over the past five years and have seen plenty of the goings on that Kate has described. Just watch the aquarium on any saturday night and you'll see fights outside, dealing going on in the side streets, prostitution, men/women urinating in full public view, be deafened by police cars hammering backwards and forwards - that's up to date and will be repeated this coming weekend.

Was this that you feel safer walking home from Shoreditch to Old st. at 2am or the 'fact' that you are the only person on this forum that actually knows anything while the rest of us plebs just make it up?

I can see Exiled's point of view. 2 stabbings, both in broad daylight around lunchtime would make me feel safer walking around Hackney at 2am instead too. [;)] However, whilst I wouldn't wish for the facts to get in the way of a good prejudice, let's take a look at what Exiled must have researched prior to settling in Hackney: http://maps.police.uk/view/hertfordshire/ (Use the zoom controls and rolling map facility to compare areas) * An average of 11 weekly acts of violence and 25 weekly acts of anti-social behaviour in Hackney. * An average of 2 weekly acts of violence and 11 weekly acts of anti-social behaviour throughout the whole of East Herts. On a more local level: http://maps.police.uk/view/hertfordshire/ * Police focus at Sele Farm is to reduce retail theft at the Co-op, theft of metals and bicycles and anti-social behaviour at the Ridgeway/Longwood Road between 6pm to 10pm. Ooohhhh, danger-danger! http://maps.police.uk/view/hertfordshire/ * Hackney, the London Borough with the 5th highest crime rate. Gulps!! Conclusion: Exiled is well-hard. Respect! [:D]

quote:Which was? That you feel safer walking home in Hackney than Sele Farm. My experience may be irrelevant to you but I feel much safer in Sele Farm due to my direct experiences. But I am female and what I fear may be different to you as I don't feel comfortable in defending myself physically. We often dictate our actions by our experiences, and 12 years ago I experienced a traumatic childbirth/early months with a baby. That experience, means I don't want anymore children (though I love him completely). So the experience in Hackney/Shoreditch means I don't feel safe there. I have also lived in Plaistow, whitechapel and East Ham. Scared in all of them too! (witnessed a knife attack in East Ham [:0]). What criteria do we have to ensure posts on this forum are relevant? Do we have timescales for experiences? By the way, I don't actually live in Hertford yet, I think that makes almost everything I say on here irrelevant.
