There are quite a few shop premises in the town and some of these are sadly empty. Does anyone know who the freeholders are and what they are actually doing to help and encourage trade in the town?

I can't for one second imagine that any freeholder of a retail premises is happy to see it sitting empty. It's not the shop owners who need a shove to encourage trade in Hertford, it's the council

few cars = few people = few customers = shops close. You don't even need to be good at maths to work that out. Ask retailers whether trade has gone up, or down since the multi-story closed. I predict . . . . . . . . less.

The car park will open just before christmas and the council will try and take credit for the 'massive festive boost to traders.' Conveniently forgetting that the 'massive autumn slump' was due to the work on the carpark. Yes, I know it will be better, blah, blah, blah, but it does seem from the outside (making massive generalisations and jumping to emotive conclusions) that the council wants to make trading in the county town as difficult as possible.

This decision was made at the council's Executive Committee Meeting on 18th May. The proposed changes were advertised and only 5 objections received, according to the council. This is yet another of Cllr.Mike Carver's initiatives - the man responsible for increasing car park charges by 10p/hr this year (Up from 70p to 80p). He also wanted to introduce Sunday charging as well but the committee deferred that decision until next year. With the new government's cutback on local government funding I would anticipate that Sunday charging will be implemented next year together with charges for on-street parking. So you won't even be able to park in Fore Street or Bull Plain for free anymore. Edit: Just realised we've gone completely off-topic here. Anyone care to address 007's original query?

I got deviated too. I am aware that the local brewery own a few non-pub buildings. The original question was really to find out who owns the empty shop buildings so apologies for the confusion.

At one time a lot of the properties in Hertford were owned by Mac's, Lord Salisbury or the Cull brothers, don't know these days who owns what, I imagine there is some way of finding out though...........must be a registry somewhere?

I believe landlords get to pay half the business rates on vacant properties so maybe if council or govenment can change that to remove that relief then perhaps landlords would be a bit quicker in letting the properties
