MTB - best single track in and around Hertford?
Morning all,
Now that the mud is starting to dry up, I've dusted down my mountain bike and have been out for a few spins. I usually head over towards Tewin and Welwyn (Bramfield Woods, Sherrards Park Wood etc.) as the terrain is pretty decent. However, I was wondering if there was any other decent single track in and around the Hertford area? Thinking of trying Broxbourne Woods this weekend as I've recently seen a few bikers there whilst out walking with the kids.
Any more suggestions?

there's quite a good track which goes from little berkhamstead down to lower hatfield road.
There's also a good one that goes from panshanger, down to the tewin road - thats very steep, well for hertfordshire anyway! Not very long though.
Broxbourne woods are always good too. Small enough to just explore wherevver you feel like! But big enough for a decent bit of exercise.

Broxbourne woods are very good. My favored route is to take the Brickendon Lane up to the farm just past the 3rd set of cottages on the right turn left right after the farm on to a bridal path which will eventually take to you to Monks Green where you can get in to the woods.
I have also recently learnt that there is a good single track which runs along the side of Brickendon lane that can be accessed just after the 2nd Mangrove road turning.
The path that skirts around the top of the woods is good fun, but watch out for the tree stump in the middle of one of the paths which is marked by a plastic bag tied to a tree. I didn’t [B)]

Victor - thanks for the map that will come in useful for me. Just one point above - do you mean Mandeville Road rather than Mangrove Road above? I usually access Broxbourne Woods via Mangrove Road myself as there's a fun little track just by the riding school (Ermine St.) that's a good warm up for the woods. Joby - the Broxbourne woods are fun as there's loads of opportunities to explore plus a few good little valleys to charge into hoping that you will be able to get out the other side! One word of warning is that it can get very congested at the weekends which will mean you have to slow down considerably.

Yes Sorry Manderville Road. Its a much nicer route with less on road riding.

Thanks all - Broxbourne Woods it is, then. Good to know there's a way to get there without the dull slog up Brickendon Lane, too.

Unfortunately it only skips out the bit from Manderville to the Rubber company.

If you're going to Broxbourne Woods and are closer to the centre or east of town you can also get into the woods via Hertford Heath, just cycle up Hertford Heath road and take a right at the garage or College Arms

Would agree with Bramfields and Broxbourne Woods. For something a little further a field though I would suggest Epping Forest. Probably the best place near by the ride your Mountain Bike. I use to ride the forest every weekend when i lived near by but since moving to Hertford haven't been back for a while.
